redfield question.......

hello all, i just picked up a nice used Winchester model 94 30-30 carbine made in 1973. i want to install an old redfield straight 2 3/4 or 4x scope made the same year. want to give this set up to my uncle as a retirement gift. does anyone have a pic of mid 70's era redfield fixed power scopes? there are quite a few old redfields out there but i need some help choosing the one i want. thanks

    I just looked up the Redfield scopes in the 1974 Gun Digest. Nearly all the scopes they made that year were the "Widefield" design.
    The ocular lens was wider than it was tall.

    I suppose you are aware the scope will have to be mounted offset to the left to allow the cartridge cases to be ejected upwards. I don't believe the angle eject model 94's that allowed the scope to be mounted over the bore axis were yet in production in the mid 1970's. Offset scopes worked but looked terrible.

    There was also a smaller diameter (3/4") long eye relief scope and mount system designed for the 94; I believe of that era. Gave you a Scout rifle type set up and avoided the top ejection issue. Might even have been Redfield, but I wouldn't swear to it.

    I have a pre-64 set up like the one RCrosby mentions. A 3/4 inch 2.5X Redfield long eye relief scope mounted forward of the rear sight. Looks a little odd as the mounts are set in the barrel; whoever mounted it had to drill and tap holes in the barrel. Must have been tricky getting them lined up and not drilling in to the bore but it works fine. I think the age of the scope is '60s rather than '70s but I'm not sure. In any case folks were using "Scout" rifle set ups long before their recent popularity. Can't say I'd recommend doing this to another pre-64 but it works. Might be ok to try with a post-64 if I didn't have much money in it and had a skilled gunsmith available.

    I know of one deerhunter who puts venison on the table every year with a 94 & 4X Widefield. Common combination for that era. I am fortunate to own several Redfields. They were bargains in the 60s & 70s. I am glad to see their return.

    Redfield marketed a 2.3X Intermediate eye relief scope from 1965 to 1971. It was called a Front-IER, had a 3/4" tube and eye relief of 6 to 9 inches. It is shown in their catalog as being mounted with the ocular lens just forward of the open top of the receiver on a model 94 Winchester. It had a field of view of only 18' at 100 yards.

    They also marketed a 2X Intermediate eye relief scope from 1965 to 1971 called the Front-IER 2X. It had a 1" tube and eye relief of 6" to 10" with a field of view of 30" at 100 yds.

    I believe these were what 22hipower and RCrosby were talking about. These can probably be found on the gunbroker auction and the other big internet auction.
