Tactical light malfunctions?
Right after Glock introduced the model 35, I bought one as a duty weapon. I Mag-Na-Ported it and carried it for several years before I retired. During that time I fired several thousand rounds through it and don't recall any malfunctions. I bought a Streamlight M-3 tactical light for it and fired several of our Department's Night Time Tactical Courses with the light attached and don't remember having any problems.
After I retired the G-35 w/ the M-3 attached became my house pistol and lived in the night stand. A year or so ago I bought a Insight SSL-1. I figured with it's greater battery and bulb life, along with more lumens than the M-3 and more mounting options, what could go wrong. After mounting it on several rifles it eventually wound up on the Glock.
I took the Glock w/ the SSL-1 to the range last month and discovered I had a problem. I was firing Remington-UMC and Speer Lawman 165 gr. FMJ-FP and after the first 10 or so rounds out of the magazine, which would always function fine, the Glock would start to jam with either ammo. All of the jams were either nose down or the round would be driven straight into the lower edge of the feed ramp. I took the light off and it would function fine.
I am/was a Glock armorer and I can find nothing wrong with the pistol. Thinking back, the Streamlight M-3 was probably never fired with less than the 4 or 5 rounds left in the magazine that seemed to cause the problems with the SSL-1. It was fired on the above mentioned course and tactical reloads never let the Glock get that low on ammo. Weather has kept me from going back to the range to test the Glock with the M-3.
Has anyone else had problems with malfunctions they believe were due to the mounting of a Tactical Light? Is the Glock 35 with its slightly longer dust cover have just a little too much flex and that caused the problem? If anyone has thoughts or insight, I would like to hear them.

Yes, glocks have been known for that since they put rails on them. So much so that SureFire made rails for their Millinium series that attached to the triggerguard and covered the frame rail. Check out SureFire.com of email me. 0 -
Did you test it without the light on the same day under the same conditions to see if it was the light causing the problem?
I have not had a problem with either my G34 or G35 with an Streamlight M6 on. I will say I dont shot with them on that much though.0 -
Glock brand lights weigh less then the streamlight or insight lights, perhaps there is a reason for that, though I can tell you from extensive use with glock brand lights they go through bulds, they need to be changed regularly..
I have put a streamlight TLR-1 on my glocks without any problems.
Just as an aside I've never had good long term results with lasers on the glocks dust cover rail.0 -
quickmajik's reply made me wonder if it does have something to do with the weight of the lights. The plastic/polymer body M-3 with batteries weighs 3.2 oz. and the Aluminum (?) body SSL-1 weighs 4.1 oz. It is back to the range with the M-3.
I did shoot with out the light attached the same day and the gun worked fine.
