recommend a semi auto rifle 4 me
Hi , I'm interested in buying an inexpensive rifle ($200-$500)that is small and light. I want a semi-auto action and I'd like a rifle that uses magazines or clips. I'd like one that has cheap and easy to find ammo. I'm looking for something bigger than a 22LR. I live in MA. I'd like something that uses low cost ammo.

you are asking for the impossible, save up another $500.00 and buy an AR-15 in 5.56mm NATO, they do NOT use clips, they use magazines, if you want a rifle that uses "clips" you will have to think M1 Garand and now we are into the $1,500.00 range.
as for the, "bigger than a 22." do you mean .22LR ?? because the 5.56mm is a .22 but quite different than just a .22LR.0 -

SKS carbines & rifles, this is a chinese carbine. It is chambered for 7.62x39mm, and this one has a 20 round magazine.. it uses 10 round stripper clips

romanian AKs, there are alot of romanian Aks to choose from, this one is a side folder chambered for 7.62x39mm. the mags can be reloaded with 10 round stripper and a clip guide.

Ruger mini-14, mini-30, the particular one below is an older "ranch rifle" which has places machined into the reciever to mount a scope. there is a stipper guides and strippers for the mini 14 that uses 10 round strait stripper clips to reload mags.

the sks can be reloaded directly with stripper clips, 4 of the other rifles use mags that can be recharged with the use of clips and guides. there are loading assisters for the other two pistol caliber rifles..0 -

You might look at Remington 7400 Semiautos. They were an improvement over the 742 series which didn't wear properly. That said, I have 3 of the 742s all working fine (there is a way to inspect for rotating bolt wear), and two Winchester 100's. I would take any of the five on a hunt as they function well, and if kept nicely, I think the Winchesters will gradually increase in value. Any Win 100 that has not had its firing pin replaced will still get a free fix by the Company....they keep a database.
I think you will find a 7400 in calibers 30:06, 270, or 243 in the $350-$425 range....plenty of punch for hunting and fun shooting, and ammo you can find or reload. If you watch local ads or run one, you can buy old stock factory ammo for these calibers from folks who have given up hunting.0 -
You may wish to consider a Hi Point 995 carbine in 9mm caliber, or a Kel-Tec Sub 2000. Either meets all your requirements. I bought my Hi Point used for $125 from a pawn shop and haven't been disappointed. My 9 mm Kel-Tec uses 17 or 33 round Glock magazines and is another good choice for $300-$400. You can still buy 100 rounds of 9mm ammo from the big "Mart" store for $22. 0 -
try a m1 carbine, i got a national ordance at a gun show that had a cracked stock and been reblued, picked it up for 300.00, i put a sporter stock on it mounted a weaver base for a scope, great little plinker very acurate. i got about 500.00 invested in it, 30 carbine ammo runs about 15.00 for a box of 50 0 -

Very few guns actually use stripper or "en-bloc" clips anymore.
So when you say "clips" I'll assume you mean "detachable magazines".
I agree with the earlier posters. If you want something that is inexpensive, small and light, that takes detachable magazines and cheap ammo, you should probably be looking at the pistol caliber carbines in 9mm luger (or 40SW).
For what its worth, the cheapest non-military surplus centerfire RIFLE ammo is 7.62x39.
So again, meeting your criteria is a simple Romanian AK-47. These can be had for as little as $400, take high capacity detachable magazines, and use cheap and readily available 7.62x39 steel case ammo (currently running about $0.25 per round, which is actually cheaper than most centerfire pistol ammo).
In terms of "small" AK's are smaller than many rifles, and you can make them smaller yet, if you install a folding stock. In terms of "light", at around 9lbs, they're not super light, but again, you can make them a LITTLE lighter by swapping out the wood furniture for polymer and using polymer magazines.
Other big advantages to AKs is that they are simple to operate, simple to disassemble for cleaning, and low-maintenance (meaning they require minimal cleaning and tend to run well in dirty environments).
SKS rifles cost even less, and are similar in terms of reliability and low maintenance, though these run best with fixed 10 round magazines loaded from stripper clips.0 -

The only further thing that I could think to add here given what has already been posted, is that it really sounds like you're wanting an SKS.
It's well within your price range, has better accuracy than an AK, and there are carbine models that are relatively small and light.
Most folks who have used an SKS in combat (that I have talked to) say that there isn't a firearm that's faster to reload than an SKS using the stripper clips directly into the rifle's internal magazine. At least it's on par with the M1-Garand
Loaded stripper clips are also significantly smaller and lighter than having to carry loaded magazines.
Some SKS's are configured to take AK-47 mags (check on legality in your area).
Some SKS's are preconfigured to accept detachable SKS mags (which have a strange looking "beak" on them). They tend to be fairly unwieldly in comparison to other detachable magazines, however.
They are reliable guns with good accuracy, and they shoot inexpensive 7.62x39 ammo.0
