220 Swift Ammo
I used to reload all of my ammo and now have sold my equipment and have no idea what ammo is out on the market i just knew what worked the best for me prior. I am looking for the most accurate ammunition that can be purchased anyone out there know who makes the best amnmo for this caliber thanks!

You might go to Midway, and lok at their ammo listings. There will be reviews on each caliber and type, and you can get some good info from people who has used the ammo as to whether it is any good or not. 0 -
Cabela's used to sell HSM ammo, I found it to be very accurate. 0 -
You can take 3 of exactly the same rifle same caliber same every thing and get totally different results with all 3. Nothing against the .220 Swift but it is not that popular and there aren't that many loads available. You need to try every available option and then decide. What works in one rifle won't necessarilly work in the next. I don't think that there are that many different loads where you can't try nearly every one in your rifle., and then determine which is best for you. 0 -
When I turned mine into a Ackley and shot plain old Winchester 55 grain PP's to fire form for it, it shot so good with those I never got to reloading for it yet... Still have about 8 more boxs to go....... 0 -
Thanks for all the information i use to shoot my .204 all the time but in wind the Swift blows the .204 away so i am going back to the oldy but goodie. Thanks.... 0 -
It will all depend on what you have for a twist rate in your barrel. A faster twist will like the heavier bullets, and the slower twist will like the lighter bullet.
A buddy of mine just got a Tikka T-3 Super Varmint in 22-250. It hates the Winchester Supreme 40 grain ballistic silvertips at $35.00 a box, and loves the Wally World $29.00 a box of 40, Winchester value pack 45 grain HP's. So keep in mind, that sometimes it is not how much you spend on it either.

I love the swift, had a ruger 77v tang safty that douglas made the barrel for the first few years after ruger put em out, late 60's I think, '57 winchester varmiter now. both loved 55 gr hornady custom that I bought a case from lock stock an barrel in the 90's, all gone now... Hornadys 55 gr varmint express is almost as good as old stuff, federal 52 gr smk is tack driver. shot a 1.25" 5 shot 300 yard group with federal but I cheated, I had 36x leupold glass w 1/8 moa dot, dead calm and 60deg F, good cigar, cool one and no rushed shots,saved target I was so proud[:)], I used normas stuff long time ago with good results. Old yellow box super X was good but not on par with hornady nor federal in my guns. 0 -
Original loadings were 48gr bullets in barrels (Winchester) that had 1/14in. twist. You may have such a barrel. That's the premise on this cartridge. Light, and fast!
You may see 55gr loads, but the 'spirit' of the .220 Swift design was for the lighter bullet travelling at greater than 3950fps.
55gr factory loads (if there is such a loading) will yield about 3600fps. Don't go above 55gr, if you see it. You won't have greater than 1/12in twist in your rifle, and as I have mentioned, you may have the original 1/14in gain.
Bottom line: don't stray from between 50-55gr bullets. Best, Joe0 -

True it was always light and fast for target. A friend of mine figured out with one (of his nine or ten barrels...for sure, maybe more) that a 1-16" twist worked better. But, he always loved to load them hot-hot.
He went back to the 1-14" twist just so he could stabilize 60 gr. Partitions. He's killed two elk with that combination. 60 gr. Partitions pushed at 3950. His philosophy with that is, "If you have to hold high it's too long of a shot." I have two of his grandsons affidavits the elk both dropped on the spot. He has also killed a bunch of really nice deer including one 33.5" 3 X 3. His son, using that rifle, killed one of the highest scoring bucks in the state of NV, #4 I believe.0
