.45acp question

How much would the bullet velocity differ with a 3" barrel compared to a 5" with a .45acp? Any help would be great! [:p]

    Have any of you guys had experience with 230 grain LEAD round nose ammo in your .45 acp's? Reason I'm asking is a pal of mine is about to buy 300 rounds of 230 grain LRN instead of 230 grain FMJ's and was concerned about feeding problems. The gun he will be using is a Kahr(Auto Ordnance) GI 1911-it's basically a WWII style gun. He does use Chip McCormick mags in it. The ammo in question are reloads from Ultramax through Cabelas 300 rounds for $114--FMJ's are 300 for $164.

    I only shoot 230 gr LRN and 200 gr SWC in my 45s.

    No problems.

    Lead is easier on the barrel IF correct Size and good lube. also works good on deer sized game.

    I worked on a Auto Ordnance once, it was rougher then a freaken cob. Depending on the hardness of the bullets there might or might not be functioning problems. If there are, just Dremel the ramp and barrel throat with a polishing bob loaded with 800 grit abrasive, till they have a mirror finish, very carefully, don't over do it. . All you want is a mirror finish, not to actually remove any metal.

    awesome thanks guys. This pistol is pretty well made and I was pretty suprised how accurate it is for a fixed GI style sighted 1911. About the only thing Kahr could do to make it run 100% is sell it with Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick magazines because the stock one was not so great but runs 100% with fmj's and a McCormick mag.

    I can't imagine why you'd have feeding problems with lead round nose ammo, since its similar to ball in profile.

    The only issue you MIGHT have is with barrel leading, but if the bullets are correctly sized, and are being driven at normal .45ACP velocities, I don't think this will be a problem.

    My pal and I just weren't sure bean--especially since this is a bone stock GI style gun. I know the LRN has basically the same profile as the FMJ round but boy oh boy are some 1911's finicky about the ammo they run--and others will chew up and spit out anything you feed them. He decided to order it so will see how it runs.

    I have the exact same gun. Yes, the stock mag is not that great. I also was surprised for how accurate it was being a plane jane pistol and all, khar really improved the quality of this pistol after they bought the company.

    Mine has never had any issues with lead bullets. Never had any build up issues either, of course I really clean mine after every time I shoot them, brush, swab, lube, field strip and good scrub every time.

    Shoot an older Auto Ord, reload with lead round nose. Pay attention that you are not shaving lead when seating bullet in case. May need to chamfer case mouth a touch. I used white rouge on a felt bob to polish feed ramp. Has worked quite well since about 1984.

    thanks for that info too 11b6r--although these reloads are "factory" ones from Ultramax--but that info will help when we reload these after shooting them.
