fishkiller41...I still live in the good old days of the Penn Greenies. Still use my trusty Penn 700/Penn 704 for boat/surf and 710/712 for light surf (12lb test or so) and the little greenie guys (Penn 714/716) for freshwater bass/crappie/perch and the like. They are still damn near indestructable and beat the Chinese stuff by a mile, at least in this old guys opinion. Started with them in 1963 and they still catch fish in 2010 for me and my grandkids. I hook them up with Penn rods (and Ugly Sticks) for both boat and surf. Got some good photos of my 9yr old grandaughter pitching Hopkins lures at the Outer Banks at bluefish with my 704 and catching bass lakefishing with her Penn 714/Ugly Stick on 8lb test last fall. Glad I stocked up on them over the years as they should last well into the next family generation. If only Penn hadn't ditched Philly and gone to China! Good fishing!

I do a lot of live bait fishing and the Penn "baitrunner" is a good reel but way overpriced.
My Okuma baitrunner works great. I can adjust the freespool drag to just barely hold back a 2oz. live mullet, or a 2 lb. blue runner, and at the flick of the switch, go to "strike/fighting drag" in less than 1/2 a second.

fishkiller41...I have to admit that I don't use live bait much other than some minnows going after bass lakefishing. I am a thrower of metal as I like to run up and down the DE/MD/NC beach in my 4x4 looking for birds and holes...just don't like to stay in one spot too much. For my kinda fishing my Greenies have never let me down over the last almost fifty years and we have caught a lot of fish in the surf with them. I am now teaching my six grandchildren to fish the same way. We have boats (two Whalers) and go out in them some but we are mostly surf folks, running the beach with six loaded surf poles in front of the truck, ready to rock and roll and wondering what the folks back in WV are doing! Good fishing. PS....Just to show that I am in the 21st Century, I do like the look of the Okuma's!

Open face Penn. Casting I use Penn Internationals. Trolling I use Penn Internationals. Bottom fishing I use a 9/0 Penn Senator electric.

SADLY. Penn sold-out or moved their mfg. to Japan.

fishkiller41...actually Penn moved production from Philly to China years ago and, sadly. that is where the Penn stuff is made today. But Penn collectors know that Penn made a small closed face reel called the Penn Special that was never advertised and assembled in Philly from Japanese parts. These little guys are actually blue in color and are rather rare. They came in three styles (#410, 420 and 430) and were noted, like all the other Philly made Penn reels, for their hardiness. Penn lore has it that only one was ever returned to the factory for repair! The bad thing about Penn is that they are long gone to China, the good thing is that because they are so stong and indestructible (and easy to work on) if you have one and take care of it, it can last several lifetimes. Parts are readily available and I am still surprised at how many fishermen like me still use them. Can't beat good old American quality! Yes, they are low tech and a bit heavy compared to the new Asian reels, but they hold up time and again to abuse and like the old Timex watches, take the lickin and keep on tickin! Good fishing!

There is some old Penns up on this ceiling that are over 40 years old and still going strong.

MMOMEQ-55......love that Penn garage ceiling! Got one just like it but no baitcasters, just spinning reels. I see a couple of black 704z' up there! My ceiling/floor is loaded with all Greenies...700's; 704's (both Greenie styles); 710's and 712's. All with different spools loaded with different lines, all Stren. Most are on Penn rods. Got into Penn spinners for the surf in the 1960's and just went, literally, overboard with them. Now, like you, have a garage full of them with their boxes. They still do the job quite nicely but my most of my younger fishing friends just gape when my truck pulls up on the beach with all six pole holders loaded with 700/704's with gold stren. When my grandaughters jump out and grab a pole and heave a Hopkins, well, the looks get more interesting! The greenies worked in the 60's in DE/MD/NC and still work in 2010! Thanks again for the neat photo!

I have used casting rods for years now. Started out on old Penn and Pfluger bait casters. Most of the spinning reels you see belong to my wife. I would rather use a bait caster any day. I do have a couple of Trout and Crappie rods that are spinners.

I like the florescent green, I think they call it Envy green, myself. I can see it better.

And of course with all that Penn rods and reels you need plenty of lures:

MMOMEQ-55...great lures, but no Hopkins? Gators? Mirror lures? Bucktails? They work wonders up here in the DE/MD/NC surf. I am going to have to run out to the garage and get my tackle boxes and start cleaning my stuff up as this darn snow is beginning to melt! We are down to the "bottom" 18" or so! My Whaler's boat cover has snapped and it is full of snow so that job has got to start soon. Makes me want to move closer to the Southland, but then I see them stories of large 'gators and Burmese Pythons and think not. Guess I will just stay here and dream of warmer days!

What do you think is in the grey boxes? LOL I use alot of buck tails mainly in chartreuse with white heads. These are just some pics I took for insurance purposes.

With the gators you have to reel fast in fresh water before they get to your fish. I have pulled many heads in from gators down Fla way.

Now the Burmese are not that bad. I used to have one that ate 20lb rabbits. She was about 15' maybe. She would crawl up beside you while watching TV. They are real affectionate creatures who like to hug a lot.

I have been cleaning 2 or 3 reels a week getting ready for spring. Just bought new line for all of them. Dang I spent almost $250.00 on line along. I use mostly Ande for salt water. My Penn internationals in 30, 50 and 80 lb class I keep in the house. To expensive to put out in the workshop.

MMOMEQ-55...damn eyes, they are the first to go! You certainly do have some bucktails in the boxes. Didn't register with me as I am partial to the whites. Being from WV, we don't really cotton to snakes much so having one snuggle up beside you, well, would not go over very well with my grandmother, Mable Harper from Harper WV. Granny taught us that the only good snake was a dead one so we sent many a copperhead/rattler to their doom when we went "burry pickin'" when I was a kid. Your photo, actually, looks like one of my kinfolk from the hill country...Jacob Harper from Harper WV, my gggrandfather! Back to cleaning them Penn greenies!

Anyone ever use a Spinmaster reel? They were dark green. I still have one that I used in Fla for years. I have never opened it.
    It still works fine.

I used to live up in Harper's Ferry WV for about 8 years. Loved it up there. Fished the Potomac and about every creek and pond around there. I borrowed that pic of the old man from Leathercraft Forum. Thought it was a cool pic.
