Question for Just C Or Nononsense, or.............

Any one else who knows.

Was talking to a guy today at the gun store who shoots a 300 rem ultra, hes loading 210 Berger VLD and claims he is getting 3332 fps over the chrony. I forget his powder which is key but he said each one was loaded over 100 grains . Something like 102, 103, 104 Grains of powder, He said somethin bout H870 and how they discontinued it[?]



My question is Is this guy serious, I cant find any loads that call for over 100 grains of powder in 300 ultra but I am new to reloading myself.

I truly have no reason to doubt this guy but if hes on to somethin..................






O Rem 700 is the gun.



Any thoughts is this BS or not 3300 FPS with a 210 grain bullet

    I know H870 and AA8700 can be loaded to over 100 grains in the RUM case.
    I would have to see that velocity over my chronograph before I would believe it. Not saying it is not true. Just hard to believe.

    nosler does list H780 in 200 gr starting load 100 gr max load 104 gr
    and 220 gr starting load 98 gr and max load 102 gr
    hornady only lists 1 load at 101.4 as a max load for a 220 gr
    using AA8700.nosler loads are 2920 to 3090 fps-200 gr and 2828-2987 fps,Hornady is 3000 fps.Not berger data,but it might help

    Who knows? Maybe if he was pinned down and questioned a little more closely, the real story might surface.

    My guess would be US869 from Hodgdon. It can be compressed for the loads he mentioned.

    Most chronographs are notorious for being low quality (cheap) and inconsistent. But they serve a purpose sort of... Lighting conditions often affect the quality of the readings also, along with the distance from the muzzle to the first screen. I don't place much emphasis on claims made by folks passing time in the gun shop.

    The antithesis of this is that he's running his loads over pressure and thinks he's just fine. But the pressures he'd need to have would be substantial and not acceptable.

    Nononsense is correct. He is either stretching the truth or he is stretching his gun with excessive pressure.

    Furthermore, there is not one reason in hello to do it. No reason for any of those overblown cartridges, neither. Just because there are deer in Texas does not mean I need a rifle that can shoot at them from Utah.

    Ask him how far was the muzzle from his chrono like Nononsense said.You can gain some speed getting closer up until you blow the chrono over from the muzzle blast.LOL Then ask him if he's pulling the trigger harder to get those speeds. LMAO

    and all this from a factory 26" barrel???/ I ain't buyin that at all.

    I was getting 3150ish with 200gr match kings and 88gr H1000, but I would be scared if I saw a reading of 3300+[:0] no matter which powder it was.

    I was getting 2950 with Berger 210's and Hornady A-max's using about 78 gr. of H-1000 out of my AR-30 Armalite. That's pretty close to being in line with what JustC posted. But, some barrels are different. I would have to say that with an RUM case, with all it's capacity, could produce that kind of velocity. But, it's also like the stories I hear of a guy doing it ONCE...not twice. Recoil is horrendous with 100 gr. of powder behind a heavy bullet. Damage to your face is much worse.

    Bottom line: That kind of velocity with that heavy of a bullet is not my cup of coffee (I don't drink tea...wouldn't be right.) There is no sense in beating yourself up over what someone else does to themselves. I'll make a point to know when reloading is safe and when it's not.

    I just posted a topic looking for info. on the 7mm RUM. I have been researching this some and I can't seem to get a 150gr 7mm bullet up to that. I think he is full of crap.
