M1 op rod
Can someone tell me the lenght of an Op rod that has been cut down for an M1 Garand tanker model? I saw a Winchester op rod at a gun shop the other day that was obviously shorter than standard but the clerk didn't know for sure what it fit but I can't think of any other use except a tanker model.Too bad, Winchester op rods are getting hard to find and expensive. Thanks

Absolutely no standard, and no US issued drawing number (therefore no official dimensions).
As you may be aware, rod length is determined by the distance the gas cylinder assembly is from the receiver. And that is totally empirical. Up to the whim of the person doing the alteration to 'call the length'.
I've seen Springfield museum examples of test rifles, and they were depicted with about two inches of forward handguard. I've seen 'Tankers' for sale with no forward handguard. You get the idea.
If you have a shortened op-rod, you'll have to custom build the rifle around it. It is what it is. Joe0 -

Numrich has Tanker parts and I think they also have a kit to convert a Garand if that is the direction your thinking of going.

I have an Arlington Ordinance Tanker conversion. The original operating rod that came with it is 17 17/16s in length. 0 -

Since I am 5' 14"" tall, I understand the 17/16" measurement. 0 -
