AR Upper Question
I am just starting the process of building my own AR and I am looking at the upper listed below. I am wondering if its worth buying. I have never heard of ER SHAW, the listed barrel maker. If anyone could provide any insite I would appretiate it. I am learning as I go on this one and dont want to end up with a cheap knock off product.

Wow those sights look awful.
I am not sure they is anything special about that gun. Surely nothing special for me.
Keep in mine you will still need a bolt, carrier, and charing handle so another $150-$200. This puts the price of the upper about $700. That is close to the price of a complete rifle again these days.0 -
The Shaw barrels are not a match grade barrel. They are however, a decent barrel, in my opinion. I don't know who makes the upper receiver for that setup, but the price seems reasonable, which I compared to a Model 1 Sales upper. I have two Shaw barrels, and they shoot as well as I do, and don't have any noticeable wear after many rounds.
I didn't notice, is this a chrome lined barrel??0 -
I think it is over priced for a no name upper. Right now you can find complete colt uppers for the price that that upper would cost you to complete. The key thing about a colt would be having resale value.
Any Stag, RRA, ect can be bought complete ready to run for $450-500. This is what you should be looking at.0 -
I have a 20" upper with a Shaw bbl. It shoots the tightest groups of any of the seven I own. It even out shot the DPMS bull bbl. I had. 0 -
E R Shaw does very good work. I have a 26" barrel he installed & blued on a custom Mauser receiver. For the price, I couldn't ask for more. 0 -
I have to agree with Nwcid on the sights they are strange and probably of the cheaper variety. IMHO if your going to have a quad rail it should be free floated which means that nothing touches the barrel.
These look like the attach normally. The E.R. Shaw barrel is okay on to itself. Again a complete bolt carrier is going to run you another $120 or so. Now your into the $600 without the charging handle another $20 I think in this case you could do better. If it were me I'd keep looking. There are so many of these for sale your bound to find a better deal.0 -
Those look like Model 1 entry level type sights, you can do much better for alot less. I think DSA (or DPMS) is selling AR flat top uppers for $275.00 (no BCG) and that's about as good as it gets i think.
The market is pretty heavy with AR stuff now - shop around, don't bite too soon.0 -

What you'd be getting there is a deal. The front sight, if it doesn't flip down, is removeable. The rear sight is the cut down removeable A2 sight. Removeable as well. Spendy unit BTW, not a cheapie as some assume. With this set-up you can slap a scope on this thing and shoot it longer ranges. I do find it a little funny though, that as good as the A2 sight is for a full length A2 rifle, no one has done the easy thing and made a machined M4 wheel for this type set-up. They would both move the same distance per click it's just the 'distance flats' cut on the sides of the wheel would reflect the reduced velocity of the 16" barreled M4. Maybe even make one for the 75/77 gr. ammo. (Mk 262 Mod 0/1)
And, don't let anybody tell you Shaw barrels are inferior. They are as good as any shooter out there at long distance. Their customer services leaves something to be desired at times, but the barrels are good.
My bottom line is get it if an M4 type upper is what you are looking for.0 -
The seller really nows how to type, but they aren't that great. Bottom of the line. Not even a chrome lined bore, its just a cheap chrome-moly steel barrel, nothing more.
Check out model 1 sales. I've never been disappointed with their products. This fit is always to spec, and the parkerized finishing is good.
The worst AR barrel I ever had was an M&A parts barrel. Was supposed to be a nice chromoe-moly barrel. It was a preban, with a press-on fake flash hider. It didn't group bad, was acceptable, but the finish sucked. I think it was krylon or something, not real parkerizing. And it was soft, like I'm not that rough with guns, but no lie the metal got dings in it very easily, kinda freaked me out. Anyway after the ban I ditched it and found a used Colt take off barrel for cheap. I never looked back.0 -
Model 1 sales uses ER Shaw barrels almost exclusively, They are button rifled and middle of the road quality-wise I think..
I like a light weight gun, with enough 12 oclock rail space to add a 512 and a magnifier and still have a rear buis on the rifle.
One of my personal favorite set ups is as follows, this particular upper is put together by model 1 sales, one of my personal favorite builders is CMMG because they have a larger selection to choose from and quality and reliability is usually very very good.

I usually try to have a QD mount with a surefire or steamlight taclight in it and a red dot like an eotech 512 or aimpoint ML3 and magnifier or acog or what have you for each upper.
a good set up will most likely cost in the 1400-1700+ dollar range when everything is set up right..0
