Winchester 1886..Original? Engraving OK?

Below is the auction link. I've been in contact with the seller, and I told him I'd put his gun on the forums for scrutiny by the experts. In addition to the rifle (and the price), what's up with his claim on the Cody letter? Below is the link. Thanks, Joe

    Pictures are to blah for any real scrutiny. Need a lot better close ups for this type of money. Lots of alll factory markings, and engraving. The fact that he says one letter from CODY says one thing and another says something else, is almost proof enough that the BS is running higher than his wader's.

    I am sure Pauline can verify the engraving, and/or the checkering is original or not. Not sure what seller in their right mind would let a $50K collectable rifle go at $20k less than real value...but then again, it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

    Lets see what Bert, and Pauline have to say...

    Okay, I'm confused, the seller says:

    ***I HAVE OWNED THIS GUN FOR OVER 20 YEARS***

    ***I AM SELLING FOR A FRIEND, AND HE WRITES DISCRIPTION AND SETS THE PRICE***

    A small contradiction? Is he referring to the 86 or 73?

    The guy who wrote the auction listing description apparently has no clue as to what the Cody letter is telling him. He wrote "PIN" for the trigger, when in fact it states "Pln" (abbreviation for "Plain"). He also seems to believe that his rifle (and he claims he has owned for 20+ years) was sent back to the factory before Cody was keeping the records... well no fooling!

    Here is the gist of the real story... that Rifle does not letter with the engraving, and it most likely was not ever sent back to Winchester to be reworked & engraved. As such, it is vastly over priced.

    This gun was not done by any of the factory engravers. It appears that who ever did it attempted to use a combination of patterns from the Highly Finished Arms Catalog to make it look authentic. It is a very poor attempt at copying the early Ulrich style of engraving.

    I had an '86 that had a very similar engraving pattern. It was done at my request by a fellow in the South West by the name of Neal Hartleip. He used to show up at all the winter chain trap shoots and engrave shotguns. Nice guy and he did good work. Mine was not the only '86 he engraved.

    Why does the loading gate photgraph so differently? Looks almost like an anodized alloy in the photographs. Shouldn't it pretty much match the finish of the rest of the rifle?

    Because it's blued and the frame is case hardened.

    I applaud you for that! I wonder how much longer he will phish with that weapon knowing he is misrepresenting it?
