suggest revolver for Mom 74 yr old
Footprnts in the snow at Mom's. Police and I both suggested a class and a handgun. Cop stressed 3x to her to get protecton. He suggested S&W 638. Looks good to me esp w/Crmson Trace.She's a74yo piano teacher at home w/some arthritis. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated and considered. Thanks. (Yes, she can still bust my butt)

The 638 would be a good choice. Best have her try one to see if she can pull the trigger double action. Please advise her that she never should cock the hammer in a real life self defense situation. 0 -
Snub .38 Special that has an easy trigger-pull. Have her feel how it grips her hand. Basically a gun that is not complicated...feels good in her hand, and has a double-action trigger pull that is not too hard. Get some hollow-points, but NOT Plus P! Take her to a range if you have one nearby...and have her empty the cylinder at some kind of target about 10-15 feet away. Make sure she realizes that she should not fire unless her life is in IMMEDIATE danger. If she has a cell phone she should keep it in her bedroom in addition to her regular phone (A GOOD working phone). If she has a car that has an alarm system...have her keep the keys by the bed so that she can push the alarm beeper to sound her horn. Install a deadbolt lock on all doors including her bedroom door. Bottom-line...get her confident on using her gun at home and WHEN she should use it! 0 -
Depends on how many octaves she can reach.
She migh be more comfortable with a K frame (Model 10, 13, 19, 64, 65, 66) with round butt.
A little heavier gun which will give less recoil, and one more shot.

Many thanks. I do have dads S&W .38 terrier snub model 32-1 from 1974. My work carry firearm. I should let her try it 1st and she will have a connection w/dad as well. (2 yrs ago jan 6). I am a mbr at a rod and gun club and am gonna take her nxt wkend. I had wondered about the featherweight frame and the recoil. The terrier is solid as a rock and may be the obvious answer! How about a Walther P22, 22 caliber pistol, very lightweight, easy to pull the slide back, easy trigger pull...loaded with a ten round magazine of CCI hollowpoints, she would have a MUCH better hit ratio than with a snubby 38. People scoff at the 22, but three or four hits in the torso with a 22 beats a miss with a 38 any day of the week! My mother in law carries a P22 and she is deadly with it! 0 -
If she's going to keep the gun at home I'd say get a 5" barreled Smith Model 60 or a 4" Ruger SP101 in 38 or 327. Small grip on each and not too large a gun in general. I think the Ruger has a slightly easier DA pull. 0 -
16 gauge shotgun with a short barrel. That takes away the aim and shoot to point and shoot. 0 -
I think you hit on it with your middle post. Go with your Dad's old gun. It'll give your Mom a connection with her husband of many years, it'll be easier for her to shoot IMHO, not much recoil with 38's, lots of pluses with no downside. It's a quality pistol. No question of reliability you get with some lower end autos. I personally am a semi-auto man, but in this case I'd opt for the wheelgun.

dfletcher makes a good suggestion. That 327 has a lot of potential, and can shoot at least 3 different cartridges that I know of, and possibly 4 or 5.
There is nothing wrong with the true and tried 38 either, but you need to get her something, and teach her how to use it. My 76 year old mother has a 4 inch barreled S&W 629 of mine at her place. She has had it for the last 20 years, and can shoot it well for a frail, little old lady. Well enough that I will not try to take it from her...I have even offered her trades...

You failed to tell us how much shooting experience she has.
If it's "none", have an alarm system installed, & forget the gun.
