convert m28 to 44 mag

how do they convert to 44 mag. how does this efect the value of the gun?????

    the m-28 (any -) is/was a .357 mag. you have either a m-29 or a m-28 that has been converted to the .44 mag. (this was somewhat popular back when you couldn't beg,borrow, or steal a m-29).

    The Dirty Harry, Smith & Wesson, was the Model 29. The 28 is a .357 Magnum known as the Highway Patrolman .

    The conversion was done by taking a 44 Mag Barrel and 44 Mag Cylinder and installing on a MODEL 28 FRAME after removing the 357 barrel and cylinder The model 28 was the cheapest N frame smith because it had a MAT black finish all the other N frame guns were HIGH polish. Value of your pistol would be less then a model 29 and less then a model 28 with the 357 barrel and cylinder.

    By fitting a Model 29 cylinder and barrel to the Model 28 frame as described above. The Model 28 is beginning to pick up a bit of value on the used market, it is after all a good old original Smith with no MIM & no lock and it's plain matte finish looks as nice as much of what Smith puts out now. Personally, I wouldn't buy a gun that has been reworked in that fashion unless I knew exactly who did the work. Even then, it's value would be as a shooter and any value as an original Smith would be gone.

    I think making a 44 Magnum in this way would run several hundred dollars (parts, fitting & refinish) and create about a $450.00 gun at the most.

    thanks for info. from now on iam buying my guns new,1st i bought model 37 with vent rib thinking it was special....got smoked...then bought model 28 thinking it was a good deal and now iam afraid to shoot it.....next time i will give you guys a call before i buy...the model 37 had more money spent on it (add ons)than it was worth (but i can hunt with it) the model 28 had more money spent on it than it was worth (and afraid to shoot it) this gun trading thing is not for me.....LOL.. (does any one want to buy a good paper weight) thanks again

    If you are saying you have a Model 28 that has been converted to 44 Remngton Magnum, providing it was done right, and timed correctly, with the barrel/cylinder gap set properly, there should be no problem. You should be able to put a feeler gauge of 0.004-0.006" between the barrel and cylinder. The chamber should be top dead center of the barrel when the trigger is squeezed all the way to the rear...you can check that with a dowel...and check every chamber in the cylinder.

    I'm curious about the 28 you can't shoot? Is this the .44? If so, tsr is right on. If not, what is it about the 28?

    sorry sould have give more info. on model 37 its a winchester 12 ga. with vent rib,adjustable butt plate,wide triger gave 150 for it(witch is alot for a 37) but i had never seen vent rib on a 37 so i tought it mite have been rare.....turns out to be add ons..i live in southeast ky and hunt squirrel and its a good gun to carry to the hills so iam happy with that gun....the smith model 28 or 29 witch ever it is...i bought as a model 28-2 44 mag. for 400.(told by seller it was model 28-2)and looks like 28 on gun maybe iam miss reading model # (hope so) its in a wood box with cleaning accessories and looks factory iam going to have better eyes look at it for me i will post pictures tonight of both guns (if its a covert its a good job) have not shot this gun....the # 2 is plain and -2 is plain the 8 mite be a 9 that # is a little faded (my wife and i are undecided about that number)

    Is the model 28-2 a polished or mat-dull-blue? If a polished blue, it's a 29-2.
