Any downside?

Besides price of the gun, is there any downside to buying a remington 870 express super magnum Vs a standard 870. I am set on the 870, however i like the ability to shoot any size shell with the supermag, any input out there?

    In my opinion, the 3.5" 12 gauge isn't really necessary any longer. It filled a need when steel shot shells were still relatively new but now that the technology has improved I think the 3.5" has limited uses. You get just a little more shot in your pattern over a 3" shell but that's about it. More shot is good for just a bit more range if you can shoot and have the gun choked right and it is certianly helpful if you are a turkey hunter. If you think you have a need for 3.5" then go for it. I understand wanting the option. I have two 3.5" shotguns but haven't bought a box of 3.5" in three years.

    Recoil on a 3&1/2 inch 870 will make your eyes water.

    It is also my opinion that if it can't be killed with a 12gauge in 3 inch, a 3 1/2 inch gun won't do it either. The 3 1/2 incher's are basically for larger payloads of steel shot, and are heavier in general.

    My all purpose 12 gauge is an 870 Express Turkey gun. It has a 21 inch barrel, and is in 3 inch. I have killed Turkey's with it at 65 yards using #6 copper plated lead shot...dead is dead.

    One small factor to consider is the added stroke length of the longer action. All I shoot / have are pump guns. It's a very noticable difference between my Model 12's stroke length and my 3.5" Benilli Nova. Short stroking on a rise of Quail or when jumping a mess of ducks can be very frustrating. The Nova only comes out when going after sea ducks 'cause plastic doesen't rust. I've shot both and can't see any difference between 3" and 3.5" except at the check-out counter.
