Winchester mdl 55 single shot
I just picked up one of these rifles today at a gunshow and looks to be in great shape. The only problem is that the cover that helps guide the round into the chamber is chipped and their sold out on Numrich's site. Does anybody know where you can find parts for this rifle?
Also, another big question about the rifle: where would one find a serial# on one of these rifles? It's not stamped in plain sight on the receiver or anywhere else that I can see. I heard something along the lines of "they didn't produce enough of these, so they may not have stamped some, most or any of them at all with a serial number"...true, false?

The Winchester Model 55 semi-automatic single shot was not serialized (all of them were manufactured prior to the GCA of 1968). Winchester manufactured 45,060 of them from 1957 through 1961.
Finding parts for it will be very problematic... good luck.0 -
use epoxy with black dye to buildup the part, sand to shape and buff out to blend it in 0 -
I thought you might like to see this old full-page, full-color introductory ad Winchester ran for the 55 in the March 1985 American Rifleman. you should make a copy of it for your files.

Nice, I actually found somebody that had put the owner's manual online too. I was half tempted to buy one I saw on the auction side just to have with the rifle. I think I'm going to make a trip to the machine shop, although I think I'll try that epoxy trick first. Thanks for the info! 0 -
Where could I find specs for the part? Would I be able to contact with Winchester for that info or is creating this part just going to be an experimenting process? I tried calling Jack First Inc. to see if they machined any, but they don't carry them...any other suggestions? 0 -
walther86, when I was looking for a 55 I ended up bidding on TWO here on GB auction side at the same time. I won the first one and a few days later won the second one. However, when the first one arrived at my FFL transferring dealer's shop we opened the box and while unwrapping the gun discovered the little plastic loading ramp was missing up top.
Later at home, I discovered the missing piece down in the bottom of the box laying on the wadded up newspaper which had been used for packing. Therefore we knew positively the part was missing BEFORE the rifle was enclosed in the bubble wrap.
The seller agreed to take it back so it ended up costing me the double shipping. And when the second one arrived it was in beautiful condition.
The piece is some kind of plastic composition. Do you have some kind of material you can add to it to replace the missing chip? Only other thing to do is keep posting to all the various forums like this that you're in need of one. Someday there may be someone parting-out a beat up one.

It seems to be a common problem with this particular part to either have it broken or missing altogether. The best conclusion I have so far is to build and shape one myself using epoxy. I wish I had a full piece for reference or even just the specs or some good pictures of it for reference. If any of you out there have this firearm, do you think you could do me a solid and email me some pictures of it? Thanks in advance! 0 -
Walther86, I'll do what I can. If I can remove it without any trouble I can then photograph and mic it. Got a new 6" micrometer recently. Absolutely not a 'smith but will try. I'll get back to you later with what I've learned. Be patient...
