wichester 1885 chamber pressure
hello out there in gunworld, i'm trying to find out the highest safe chamber pressure for an origional win. highwall rebarrel project. my reciever was made in 1900. the rim cutout is about .560" is there anyone out there that can re-heat treat and case color this reciever and breech block? I understand blueing didnt start till 1901? any suggestions on a barrel maker for a half oct. half round? thanks, cooper.

What caliber?
They made the 1885 clear up to .30-40 Krag and .405 Win; pressures in the 40,000 range. No doubt they have been hotrodded higher with Mann firing pins, etc, but why?

The original high-wall receivers were factory chambered in a number of smokeless powder cartridges (30/40, 303 British, 25-35 WCF, 30 WCF, 32 WS, 33 WCF, 35 WCF, 405 WCF, and even a scant few in 30-06). Winchester's cartridge development division used high-wall barreled actions for decades to test new cartridges, including the 300 Win Mag. There is not a single rimmed cartridge I can think of that would exceed the capabilities of an original high-wall action that is in good condition.
There are a number of people who can re-case color the receiver frame and block. Winchester blued Model 1885s well before 1901 (August), but it did not become the standard finish until that time. I have found ledger entries as early as 1886 were someone special ordered a blued gun versus the standard case hardened finish.0 -
On page 63 of John Campbells book The Winchester Single Shot There are several attempts by people to destroy a Winchester 1885 with maximum loads from the .405 and the .45-70. They blew out firing pins and cracked hammers, but were unable to cause any catastrophic failures. I think the strength of the 1885 is one of the attributes that endears it to so many people. 0
