Winchester 308 model 100

Experts, I used to own a 308 model 100. I liked it a lot never had any trouble. I'm considering purchasing another one for an extended wilderness adventure where reliability is most important. I have read several articles that question the rifles reliability. Am I making a bad choice?

    If reliability is your major concern, than get either a single shot or bolt action. A semi-auto of any kind can jam, and the model 100 would not be my gun of choice.

    It is imperative to keep the gas chamber clean. I have two and have had no problems when properly cleaned. They are getting pricy. If my personal safety was dependent on the rifle, Id probably go with a bolt or Encore type also.

    If you are going on an adventure where reliability or not can get you killed or hurt, you, want a bolt action, or at the very least, if you must take a semi-auto, an AR-10 type rifle. Any of the sporting semi-auto centerfires are too finickey for absolute reliability...that includes the Winchester 100, and SXR, Browning BAR, Benelli R1, and especially anything Remington ever made that was semi-auto.

    This should have answered your question.

    Your life and survival may depend upon the performance of this rifle. While a rifle such as the M100 may perform reliably in a civilized venue, the potential for catastrophe in the 'wilderness' is high when you can least afford it.

    Single shot rifles of any design may be fine if you're in an area with little danger from predators but they are not my first choice for wilderness defense from things bigger and/or nastier than I care to tangle with.

    A good quality bolt action rifle with a stock and barreled action prepared for extremes in climate and circumstance would be my first choice. Environmental hazards need to be addressed and prepared for before leaving on a trip such as this. DO NOT forget about the trigger when weatherizing a rifle for wilderness conditions. Any failure can result in personal harm.

    A quality scope built for rough handling and poor conditions is advisable. Cheaping out here will cost you more than money.
