I'm not a Remington expert, by any means. The model 700 came out in 1962, the big seller here in my part of the country (pacific NW) was the 7mm Rem Mag. I have my dads the was built in June of 62, I don't know what the first month of production was. That said, I don't believe I've ever seen one in 308, but then again I haven't realy been watching. I can tell you how many pre 64 model 70 308s I've had in my hand. If you look on the barrel, you'll find two letters stamped on the left side of the barrel, the first is the month code, the second is the year. The year code for 1962 is J, the month code is by month numbers, Jan-1 Dec-12.

Thanks for your input. Fjestad's reference book doesn't make mention of anything special about the 308.

They are not rare, but since they are such a fine gun and caliber people tend to hold on to them and they don't come up for sale very often. I've only seen two as you describe for sale in local shops in the past year.
