can you fire 40 cal ammo in a handgun chambered in 10mm? like the way you can fire a 38 in a 357. id assume that you could not fire a 10mm in a 40 because the case is to long correct?

You can fire 40 S & W in the 10mm if the 10mm happens to be a Smith 610 and you use moon clips. I use the 40 for cheap plinking & when I don't feel like reloading.

Correct. I just got schooled. [:I][:)]

Sure you can, I do it all the time in my G 20. Rimless cartridges like the 40 S & W/10 mm are headspaced by the rear face of the extractor as they are fed through the magazine. This is known as "Controlled Feed".

No problems will occur because the 10mm chamber is longer then required. As long as the shorter 40 S & W cartridges will feed through the longer 10 mm magazine, it works fine. I've been shooting 40's in my G 20 for over 10 years now without any problems.

The folks who tell you it can't be done and it's dangerous, don't know what they are talking about. The "Controlled Feed" is the key, as long as the rear face of the extractor controls the headspace you won't have problems.

To my knowledge most semi-auto pistols are specifically designed as "Controlled Feed" guns. The Beretta .22's that don't have a extractor are the only ones that obviously aren't.

The revolver analogy is good, and yes you can fire 40SW with moonclips from the Smith 610 revolver (if you are lucky enough to own one!).

From an auto. . .just because you "can" doesn't mean you "should". I'd in particular be concerned about reliability trying to feed shorter cases through a longer magazine and action.

You "can't" fire 10mm out of a gun in .40SW because the 10mm case is longer.

Even assuming you could somehow cram in a 10mm round, the 10mm is loaded to higher pressures than 40SW (37500 psi vs 35000 psi), and use of higher pressure ammo would at best increase wear and tear on the gun, and at worst be unsafe.

As Rufe-snow eluded to, yes, you CAN shoot .40 S&W in an unmodified 10mm auto gun. The question is whether you SHOULD. If I were in a SHTF scenario, then absolutely I would. However, remember there is much more pressure behind these than say shooting a .22 short in a .22lr where the bullet has to jump the gap to the lands.

I know guys that have shot thousands of rounds through them without failure, but I know I won't ever buy a gun from them. I have around fifty 10mm's and the only one I have ever shot .40's out of is my S&W 610 and I used to have a Springfield Omega with a barrel conversion kit.
If you want to shoot .40 S&W, then get one. If you want to shoot a real autopistol, get the 10mm auto and shoot real 10mm auto through it. http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_25&osCsid=fnkfbuoql53jvgvla77q86i7k5

I tend to agree with Rufe-Snow on this issue. I once fired a box of 40 S&W through my Glock G20 just to prove to someone that it could be done. There were no failures of any kind and accuracy was good. I will probably never do it again simply because I don't like the 40 S&W that much. I prefer the 10mm with full power loads.

I agree to some extent with rufe-snow. It is safe to do this with an auto, because like the 38/357 relationship, these are straight walled cases. The extractor does hold the round back against the breachface, so the firing pin will contact the primer. It so happens, because of these two conditions, the pistol will fire, and possibly work.

However like many auto pistol cartridges, the 10MM, and 40 S&W headspace off the casemouth, not the cartridge being held in place by the extractor.

    It is not any unsafer, than firing a 38 in a 357 magnum or a 40 S&W in a Model 610 revolver.
