S&W model 1000m shotgun

I was givin a S&W 1000m shotgun, I assume the M stands for magnum,if so is there any way to get this firearm to cycle with standard loads?

  These shotguns were made in Japan for S & W during the 70's/80's time frame. There is a rubber "O" ring in the gas mechanism that deteriorates due to age and use. If your having cycling problems you might consider replacing this "O" ring.
  
  I don't know for a fact if these shotguns were designed to fire 2 3/4" shells, but if the gas system isn't functional the "O" ring might be the root cause of the problem?
