New barrel for my rifle
I would like to rebarrel my Rem 700 and considering going with a McGowen BBl. Does anyone know of any other barrels I sould consider? If so please give me your input. Thanks in advance for whatever info you can provide. The caliber I chose is 338-06.

I like your cartridge choice. My .338/06 is on a VZ24 Mauser action and has a barrel sold by Midway (Adams & Bennet I think). 200 gr. bullets chronograph at 2800 fps and 250 gr. bullets at 2500 fps. 5-shot groups with the 200 Hornady spire are just over 1 1/2" and with the 250 Sierra BT just under 2".

A-Square standardized a .338/06 to their specs within the last few years so their dimensions, dies, even brass with headstamps are available, and it'll probably be a cool gun once you're done!! 0 -
A close friend of mine swears by Harry McGowen and has had five or six different rifles rebarreled by him. They all have shot great and the delux bluing Harry does looks fantastic. Still their are dozens of barrel makers out there that you could use. In many ways it will come down to money, you can get it rebarreled for more or for less then Harry will charge you if you look around. I will in the next couple of weeks be sending a single shot action to him to barrel for me because of all the great things I've heard of him. The only bad that I ever heard is how long it takes to get a complete custom rifle from him, but it is the stock making that is the problem not the metal work...... 0 -

As an FYI:
Caliber is a diameter and what you state is a cartridge.
Not all barrel makers will put their barrels on a rifle. Dan Lilja and Gary Schneider are two of those but not the only ones for sure. Harry McGowen is a gunsmith now and sold the barrel making business which has been moved. New name is McGowen Precision Barrels, located in Montana.
The quality of a given barrel can be enhanced by quality gunsmithing. Lesser quality gunsmithing decreases the chances of getting acceptable accuracy from the new barrel.
We are continually blessed with an ever increasing number of quality barrel makers here in the U.S. There is a longer list but it's on another computer so I'll post it later. Here is a short list of the top barrel makers.

Hand-lapped button rifled barrels. Lilja's 3-groove 6BR barrels are very accurate and clean fast. Lilja's rim fire barrels are among the very best.

Shilen Barrels
Big-name Texas barrel-maker still produces the lion's share of winning short-range BR barrels. They now offer ratchet (canted land) as well as conventional push-button rifling in 3, 4, 5 and 6 grooves.
