Deringer Pistol

Hi, this gun was posted here before, but I thought a better heading and pictures may get some more information.

This pistol measures 5 1/2 inches overall and the barrel is 2 3/8 inches. The caliber looks to be .41 The gun is marked "DERINGE" on the top of the barrel with a faint mark at the end. I found in a book that some Henry Deringer copies were produced at the same time he was making guns and marked this way. Apparently most were made in Europe and used for American trade. It said the the exact origin of these is unknown, so I thought I would post and see if anyone cold tell me more about it or give me an approximate value. Any help is appreciated.

    It's marked "Deringer". The "r" is lightly struck. That's all I can tell you.
    There is the possibility it's a real Deringer.

    Not a lot of additional info but: Deringer type pistols are a class all their own - the real ones of the 1850-60 period. There are modern copies. Yours looks old and real (a real copy) but it would take a hands-on exam to validate it. Flayderman lists values from a few hundred to a few thousand depending on condition, size, maker, etc. Some of the copies of the period rival those made by Deringer in collector value. There were many makers who copied them and many versions of the name, such as double 'r' spelling and with/without the final 'r'. Yours was probably marked Deringe by a single piece die - and the maker added the final R afterward. If real, guestimate value around $800.
