Remington 798

I am looking at buying a remington 798 in .308 and was wondering if anyone had any advice good or bad about this gun I have read up on it and know the history but the price it is being offered at seems to good to be true. Thanks

    Does anyone know anything about the new Remington 798. I realize the barrreled action is being sold. Does anyone know anything about the barrel? Would you consider the action to build a custom sporter with? Will the action fit a Mauser 98 action stock inletted by say Boyd brothers ?

    One of the better buys right now.

    Basically a K98k action made in Serbia and done so very well.
    This is the standard length action like the K98k and VZ24 not the 1/4 inch shorter action of the Yugo 24/47 and M48 types.

    You may be able to stick a German K98k bolt in it but not having done so that is a guessed assumption (safety may not work correctly but should fit)
    If so a back up bolt would be a cheap bit of insurance. easy enough to check.

    These used to be imported by Interarms & then Charles Daly as the Mark X action, before Remington. They are a true Mauser copy from an established manufacturer and have a good reputation.

    In my books they're great rifles indeed...Priced right...just need to slick up the action and you're good to go!!!

    I bought my Rem 798 30-06 and 7RM and I'm a happy camper!!!

    Just work the bolt while watching TV with some gun oil on the rails and you'll be good to go...may take a few sittings but its worth it[:D]

    My 30-06 shoots IMR 4350 53.4gr/180gr NP/CCI 200 into < 1/2" groups consistently...

    My 7RM shoots factory ammo Win PP 150 grainers 3/4" consistently!!!

    Both rifles shot this way outta the box, yep before I FF/GB the rifles!

    I have confidence when I'm in the field with these...I'm the only weak link....[8D]

    Thanks for the advice. Thought I would post my results mounted a burris scope on this rifle and got it sighted in and is close to being called a tack driver, just needs a little more time on the range. The action was a little tight but I took the advice from above and it smoothed up in no time.

    Thanks for the report back. They are indeed great rifles. They used to be Charles Daly Mark X's back in the day then Remington bought the rights to import them. I've got a 799 and a Mark X in 30-06. They both shoot great. And yes, it helped to just keep working the bolt and wearing them in.
