Remington 721 .270...scope?
Hey guys I bought a Rem 721 a few weeks ago and wanted to ask a few questions. First it came with Weaver K 2.5 scope with a crosshair/dot in Stith mounts..are there any other scopes that will work in these mounts? Looks to be 3/4 or 7/8 not sure.
Second did anyone make a reciever sight or peep for this? It was made in 1948 according to the letters...I think I did alright buying it at 175.00 or did I? I'm guessing 80% condition..Thanks bull

I have a 721 in 300 H & H - it's "almost new" shape but I unfortunately paid a touch more than you did. [:(!]
I think the left side of the 721 receiver is drilled & tapped for a peep rear, you should be able to find an old Redfield or Lyman to fit it. Whatever fits the 700 or 40X (and maybe 722) will fit the 721. I have an Olympic rear peep on a 40X, works great. You may have to buy a base for the sight, then mount the sight to the base. Bases are cheap, old peep rear sights are not - check out the GB auction side or others.
The Weaver & Stith set up is a good one, old Weaver scopes in good condition are anywhere from $40.00 to over $150.00 for some models. If your 2.5 has a post reticle it's more desireable than plain old cross hairs, the Weaver should be a 1" tube. I was looking at Stith mounts for my Savage 99 and I think they were over $100.00.
Since the front "bell" of the scope slides into the Stith, if you go to another scope with a 32 or 40 mm front bell, obviously that won't work. I don't know enough about Stith to say for cetain that they made mounts to fit the larger bell, but my 1st choice would be to find an old Weaver 1.5 to 4.5X variable with the straight body and use that with the Stith.0 -
Only way you'll know is to see how it shoots on a target at 100 yds. A 60+ year old rifle might have a shot out eroded bore. If it shoots OK, you done good. If not your going to have to rebarrel it, which might or might not be worth it. 0 -
$175 for a 1st year production rifle 80% w/scope I'd say you did OK! You may want to check that scope diameter. If it's the K-series like you say it's likely 1". Like has been stated, the 721 is D&T for a receiver sight but you'll have to notch the wood on the left. Personally I dislike having to do that. My early 721 '06 wears a Weaver K6 scope and it's a great shooting rifle. The stock seems to have a lot of drop and I've had a couple of scope cuts in the eyebrow [:I] but they stop bleeding quickly. Shouldn't be a problem with the 270. And that Stith mount is a collector's item. Enjoy your new gun.

Thanks for the info guys..I measured the scope body and it is a 1" scope..just looked smaller with no "bell". I think I will try it like it is, even with my old eyes it might work. I did notice my 14 yo "eyeballing it" already...probably will lose this one too..[^]...bull 0 -
Popular rifle, I bought my first one in 1960. Still use it in deer season, has taken 25-30 bucks. The top of the receiver on this rifle has 2 screws. Redfield makes a mount that screws down into these openings. It is a single piece mount with dovetails for the scope itself. I put a variable Redfield on it. Fits on with one screw into the rear dovetail and swings out and off. It still shoots a nice small pattern at 100 yards. Have never had a problem with it coming loose. This past year had the opportunity to purchase another 721 which is in same condition as my old one.........nice, no chips, nicks, or gouges, and a nice finish. It has a Weaver swing off mount on it. Someday am going to put a Refdfield on it like the old one. 0
