what is the better barrel
im looking to by me a new ar-15 i have the choice of 3 different types of barrels which one would be the best choice.
number 1== polished 416 stainless steel
number 2== chrome lined
number 3== chrome moly steel

Depends what you want to do with it.
In GENERAL, the most accurate barrels are stainless, though unless you are a match-shooter, you may not notice a difference or need it. To take advantage of increased accuracy, you want not just stainless, but a stainless match-grade (usually bull) barrel.
Chrome lining helps prevent corrosion, makes cleaning a bit easier, and should reduce barrel wear.
I'd say for the average schmoe, chrome is better and if you have to ask the question, chrome is probably better.0 -
i was kinda thinking the overall wear and tear like after several 1000 rounds and for preventing rust which would hold up better. 0 -
Are the barrels all made by the same maker? If they are not then that could also be a factor. Another point to remember the AR system is very flexable so a middle of the road do everything setup may not be the way to go. My AR has good adjustable aftermarket trigger and two different uppers. One is a 24" bull barrel, scoped, flat top for target and varmints. The other is a 16" chrome lined standard milspec setup. The 16" does not get nearly the use the 24" gets..... 0 -
When an existing part is plated there is a nominal difference in the plated thickness. Match air gauge barrels measurments are extremely consistent in diameter. Air go the chrome line barrel will not be as accurate. Conversely the chrome lined barrel may tend to last a little longer if it does not crack. The electrolysis prossess used to hard chrome parts tends to harden the existing metals resulting in pre-mature metal fatigue i.e. hard chrome parts will eventually crack. I have never heard of a chrome line barrel doing this but in theory this can eventually happen. 0
