Model 94 Action Question

I have just purchased my first Lever Action Rifle and have observed it to be very "Choppy" when cycling the rifle. It is not very "smooth" at all. Also, the lever appears to be somewhat loose when "shaking". Do these sound like "normal" characteristics? Sorry for the trivial questions I am a novice. Thank you!

    Normal for a post-1963 made Model 94[xx(].

    It is a post 94. I could not justify the additional expense of a pre-94 without at least "seeing" and shooting a 94 first. I appreciate the responses. It gives me more confidence about my purcase. hanks![8D]

    I'm guessing the "choppy" description of the 1894 action's cycle are a) when the lever first drops an inch or so releasing the vertical-sliding bolt (easy) b) when the hammer is then contacted by the sliding action top and it is pushed back against the hammer spring (stiff) and c) when the hammer is held in the notch and the action top slides easily again over it (easy) d) when the carrier pops up with the next round (a click). On closing there will be a bit of a last-second click when the vertical-sliding bolt locks into place behind the sliding action top. Unload it and watch it as you cycle it very slowly, the steps in the action are easy to see/feel as it goes through the motions. Like everyone said, it's normal.
