Remington 700 ML question.......

All,

Looking at getting a used 700 ML in 50 cal. with a stainless barrel and black plastic stock. Have looked at quite a few and have one question. On the back of the bolt some are all stainless and some are blued. Does this mean anything other than one is blued and one ain't? I was wondering if it had anything to do with a 209 primer conversion. The first is all stainless and the second is blued. Thanks.

    If you're referring to the back of the bolt, yes you are correct in assuming it is the 209 conversion. You can buy the conversion in the blued or the stainless version. It may be that whoever put the odd colored one on, couldn't get ahold of one in the right finish, or they did it thinking it looks cool. Whatever the case, the 209 is the only way to go on the 700ML. I have 2 of them, and wouldn't get rid of them for anything. They are very accurate at 100 yards. I use 100 grains of Triple 7 and Barnes 250 grain expanders. I can get 1 1/2" groups consistently. Between my daughterr, my wife and myself, we have shot a boatload of deer with ours, and will most likely shoot more boatloads before we're done hunting. Good Luck

    hadjii is right. Also about them being accurate. They are great guns although when I first got my .50 (I also have a .54) I had trouble with the gun. It seemed the firing spring wasn't long enough or strong enough and would often take multiple strikes to fire. Once replaced with an aftermarket 209 conversion everything is perfect. My .54 came from the factory with the 209. The .50's with the factory 209 I believe are 26" whereas most without the conversion are 24".

    Thanks for the answers guys. I finally purchased one here on GB. Luckily it came with all of the original stuff. Here in Oregon we have some really strict laws on Black powder. Open sights only, no pellets, open ignition only(no 209), no sabots. But since I have never tried it I thought what the hell, let's mix it up some. Thanks again and happy new year all.

    toad67, here's what you do. I have my 700ML set up this way. My wife's and daughters' have scopes, but I put a williams WGRS receiver sight on mine. It just screws into the rear scope base screws. It improves accuracy a whole bunch, and it's fast. Also, the eye will naturally center the front sight in the aperture of the rear sight. You'll be surprised at the groups you can hold at 100 yards with the receiver sight. Here's one other suggestion that I learned by many years of the 700ML. If you have to use caps and not the 209's, absolutely, definitely, without a doubt use the musket caps, and not the no.11's. You got alot hotter ignition, especially when it's cold. with the incostincies in the manufacture of no. 11's, I had alot of misfires with them. I changed springs, I changed nipples, and I did lots of playing around, but the one thing that helped more than anything else, was to go to the musket caps. As soon as the 209 conversions came out, I replaced all 3 of my standard nipples with 209's, and haven't had a misfire since, but if you have to use them, then I guess you have to use them, but definitely use musket caps. Good Luck, and enjoy the 700's. they are way out-dated now I think, with all the new stuff, but I still like my 700's alot, and have no desire to replace them at all. i would like to find one in 45 though. They're out there, but hard to come across. Also, the ones with the 26" barrels were their last version, called the magnum version, andyes they were equipped with 209's. I think, but am not totally sure that they added the 26" barrel to keep up with Knight's latest muzzleloader at the time. Of course, we all know where Knight is now.

    That is a good price. I wouldn't sell mine for that.

    These respond very well to a good trigger job (like most other Remington's).

    I hunt two different states with different laws in each so for me, I put Leupold QR scope mounts and a 2x7x32 scope on it for one state (or during regular rifle season) but I can easily remove the scope (with no noticable change in POA). I replaced the factory metal sights with fiber-optic sights for those low light situations (especially for my failing eyes). I do like the receiver site idea too if you have no use for a removeable scope.

    One last thing, since you can't use sabots, use conicals of some type. In my experience the rate of twist on these are too fast for roundball and accuracy is horrible with them. Also, for my 24" version, my accuracy went down when I went above 100 grains of powder although it is rated at 120 grains. I shoot 240 grain JHP sabots. I know you can't use them, but maybe that will give you an idea of what you can shoot with them.

    bambihunter, I noticed a drop in accuracy as well when I climbed to over 110 grains of loose Triple 7. Last year and I got lazy and used pellets. I'm sure I don't get quite the velocity, but it is a little handier. I use 2, 50 grain pellets of Triple 7. As far as the price, there isn't a whole lot of resale value in them. I guess that's partly I'll keep using them, but also, I just like them. I seen a 54 cal. on here priced at over $600 for a bare rifle. I guess he's mighty proud of it. Sure hope it has some sentimental value, because he's going to have that one for a long while. As far as switching to a scope, I guess I'm lucky. I have 3 of them in the house. If I want to use one with a scope, I just grab my daughters' and head out the door. that way, I can keep mine with the WGRS on it.
