dissolving red loctite
I bought a pre 64 M70 that had an old scope mount for a balvar scope. I am going to replace it with a 1 piece mount. When I removed the old mount it was built up with red loctite on the top of the receiver. How can I dissolve this without harming the finish? thanks Don

loctite remover will soften it up.i didnt know it was available but a machinist friend gave me some when i had a similar problem. 0 -

You need 350 to 450 degree to allow the screws to be removed easly. if not heated enough the screw will turn very hard. Heat up slowly to avoid damaging blueing. After you think it is ready apply preasure with screwdriver if it does not turn with some ease apply more heat. At some point the screw will turn with some ease. I have removed alot with no damage to finish,just be carfull.0 -
From the post, sounds like more than just a screw. If just a screw, a soldering iron held to the screw head, and then unscrewed while hot will work. If the whole area beneath a scope mount has been locktited, you will need a heat gun- and a dictionary so you can use the correct words to cuss the person that did that. 0 -
go to a high end cooking supplies store And look at the spatula that are made From high temp Plastic type material they will not scratch the blueing then take a propane torch and flash heat the loctite and scrape off with spatula They also make a small scraper to clean glass cook tops.from the same stuff. 0 -
The screws are out, it looks like somebody used a mount for another rifle and made it fit the receiver by flooding loctite under the mount. It's about an 1/16" thick. I will try to find some loctite remover. Thanks Don 0 -

Q: How can I remove a fastener that is "permanently" locked in?
A: The application of heat is needed to remove a fastener that can't be removed with a hand tool. Temperatures of 325F and above is needed to break down a standard anaerobic, 500F for high temperature Anaerobics. A heat gun or propane torch is commonly used to do this process, and careful disassembly should occur while parts are still hot. Once apart, and cooled, use methylene chloride (Chisel #79040) to remove cured excess material. Always wipe down the fasteners with clean up solvent to remove the wax film that Chisel leaves on the surface.0 -
perry shooter, has this one in the basket. A small non-stick spatula, and a propane torch. This will get most of it, then you might need to resort to a cotton cloth to sop up the small drops when they are in a liquidous state, when the bulk of it is gone.

Loctite makes Loctite CleanUp Solvent to disolve the set up stuff.
It contains N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. Comes in a 3 oz. bottle.

Acetone has worked on some adhesives I needed to remove and I have also used nail polish remover. If you can get the original manufactures remover that is the best way to go unless the cost is prohibitive. 0
