Which .22 would the caliber marking "22 Cal" on the barrel of an 1873 be? Short, long, long rifle? I don't have a picture of the carrier.Serial #191850

22 Short. The Model 1883 was only chambered in 22 Short or 22 Long... never 22 LR. Those that were made for the 22 Long will be marked accordingly. 0 -

I currently have a 22 short 1873, but the brass carrier looks like it will adjust for the long cartridge as well? There is a steel stop held in place with a screw that can be moved forward and back, is this something that came on all 22 short rifles or was this a modification that was done after the fact?
