Anyone have Simichrome experience?

I recently acquired a plated S&W 686 that I'd like to clean up some. A friend recommended Simichrome metal polish for the task. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

    Works good, just polish lightly. You also could use a Kleen Bore Lead Away Cloth on your stainless gun.

    hello Jim, I know this is going to sound a little crazy to you but I can tell you from personal expirience this works well on all kinds of chromes. again this is going to sound crazy, it did to me to years ago when this trick was passed on to me. I am a body man by trade and also a hobbyist in the gun field, and have found this to be an awsome way to fix chrome cheaply. get out of your cuboard a piece of aluminum foil, then crumple it up with the non shiny side out, then go to the fridge and get out your ketchup bottle and use the foil ball with ketchup on it to polish your piece...think I'm joking? ok ...try it on a rusty bumper first and then you wont be laughing so hard...."food" for thought....it really works! and beats several dollars twared the expensive fixes out there....     Tim, thanks for the tip. Doggone, this forum's better'n Heloise any day. Think I may try that on a rusty bumper first, though. I already have the KleenBore Lead Away cloth, dcs; I'll use that tonight...and thanks.

    Are you sure it is not nickel plating as s&w did not chrome plate their guns. Use some flitz or simichrome will work well also.

    If its a 686, why would anyone plate it? It may have been polished like Colt's Ultimate Stainless finish.

    Jim simichrome is great for hand polishing are touching up spots on brass to nickel maybe chrome as well. my ? is 686's are stainless sure it's not s/s that needs a touch up and not chrome? don't really seing s&w even nickeling a s/s gun.sure more will know but opinion is it's s/s that needs a touchup unless it's aftermarket chrome. keeep us informed on what you find out. a pic may help to determine if it is plating are true s/s. yours Kevin

    Never heard of a plated M686. And, it's not listed in SCSW.

    In any case, if it had been a factory plating job, there would be a large N stamped on the barrel, cylinder, & frame.

    And the ketchup trick? That's just the acid in the tomatoes. A sponge & Coke would probably work as well.

    Simichrome is good stuff but is the same as Flitz which is good also and probably easier to find.
