can anyone tell me what this gun is worth its a 270cal. pre 64 in good shape

    I just acquired a Winchester model 70, 264 Mag. Serial #476XXX, which I think has a manufacture date of 1960. Can anyone give me an approximate value for this rifle? The bluing is mosly gone, but no rust. The stock has very little of the original finish and some darker oil stained areas. There is a crack near the butt plate. The bore looks great, but I can tell this rifle has seen a lot of use. Any guesses on its value? Also oppinions if I should refinish the stock?

    $400 or so, sounds like a good candidate for a refinish.

    Todd is right in line on price for your rifle, IMO. You realy need to look at the barrel with a bore scope, pre 64 264s are famous for throat erosion.

    Thanks for your help. How do I detect throat erosion and what should I be looking for in the bore?

    Find a gun smith, or gun shop that has a bore scope, have them look in the barrel and give you an opinion. I've looked at alot of pre 64 264s and found more with bad barrels than I have good barrels. Pre 64 264s in good NRA condition bring a premium price, they are hard to find. Your gun, in the condition you describe, if the barrel is good, is a shooter, if it isn't it's a parts gun. An option would be to rebarrel it, if your not a reloader it might be advisable to rebarrel to 300 Win mag, or 7mm Rem mag. The bolt and magazine are the same, and ammo is readly available, at better prices. If the barrel checks out good, every 264 I've had, or shot, has preformed best with 140gr bullets. Just a little FYI.[:D]
