Mauser Scope Bases

I was looking at weavers website for the correct bases for a mauser action rifle, regardless of which action you have they state that you may have to shim the scope for proper alignment. would i need to get a alignment rod for the rings as well as lapping rod to get everything straight??

    Did it say shim the "scope" or shim the "bases"?

    I have an old Rem. 1903 that has been sporterized and I can clearly see that the bases are shimmed. Just asking. I don't know how you would shim a scope, don't make sense.

    I would prefer to shim the base but some do put shims under the scope in one ring or the other depending on whether it needs to move the POI up or down. One reason is that many Mausers have had some grinding on the receiver ring to remove a national crest or some such and some Mausers just aren't of the same specifications.

    There's the first problem, Weavers.

    Why buy junk when for just a couple dollars more you can buy quality bases and rings that are made to fit your action?

    One "problem" with Mausers is that a lot of them have been ground on by gunsmiths, and not all of them (ground actions) are the same height or radius, so some minor tweaking may be needed.

    my dad had the gun shooting good years ago and then through his infinate wisdom took everything off and remounted it later with *whatever he could find* the front and rear bases are the right ones and the rings look mismatched... gonna start from scratch and see how that works out then shim bases IF needed. i believe i have seen the cresent shims that you would use to shim the scope, im just not real confident on having to shim anything and thought i'd ask for some opinions

    When I set up a Mauser 98 sporter action for scope mounts I use a level plate. A level plate is a plate that you can screw your action onto which can then be placed in a bench vice and leveled using a good quality torpedo level. Generally the flat bottom of the M98 receiver is parallel and true to the action/barrel bore. My level plate is made of milled aluminum, but could be made from 3/4" plywood in a pinch. This will give you a good starting point to judge how to setup/shim your scope bases which should, when done, also be level and true. A 1"dia piece of stock/tubing in a ring and the other ring half mounted to the bases then are used to check the allinment and such. This can be tricky and involved to get correct and is why it is generally refered to a good riflesmith.......

    Not only have many military receivers had crests, clip guides, etc. ground off - the top of the receiver (front & rear) was not thought to be a critical dimension when made. The manufacturers had no notion of mounting a scope up there 60+ years ago, so had no reason to hold tolerances closer than necessary for functioning and addition of markings.
