Remington MD 8 Need Help (See Pics...)

Need help from someone familiar with the Remington Model 8 rifle. Rifle has a Weaver KV scope mounted offset from the barrel. See photos below.

1. Is the scope era correct for this rifle? (Rifle 1906-1936. Scope 40s vintage?)

2. The ejection appears to be horizontal. Why is the scope offset from the center-line of the barrel?

3. I can't get the action to close. Is there a release button somewhere?

4. All the references I have found say the grip is either straight or half pistol grip. Is this full pistol grip possibly original?

    The scope is about as close as you are going to get for vintage, and something that works too.

    Things are not always as they seem. The ejection appears to be to be horizontal, but it is like the original version of the "angle eject", but it is more vertical than horizontal.

    To release the bolt, pull back and out on the bolt knob. If my memory serves me, this is like many other early semi-auto's...and some are still made like that today.

    That is the half pistolgrip that is often referred to, in your pictures.

    Is the Model 8 magazine removable? Or is it removable only on the Model 81 which made slight improvements on the Model 8 from 1936-1950?

    Mag. not removeable on either the 8 or 81. A kit was made, long ago, to convert to removeable mag. but rifles and/or kits are seldom encountered.

    That's a Stith mount on there and the weaver KV was quite late as Weaver K's go. Also that scope is turned 90 degrees to the left of where they are usually mounted--probably to clear ejection so that the cases don't hit the adjustment knobs.

    I have a twin to that rifle. Stith mount and all. The reason that your bolt won't close may be due to a bad spring in the bolt. I had the same problem with two Model 8's that I had. My sunsmith fixed it for $10.00. There is a small spring in the bolt that helps it to twist closed. They go bad with age. Maybe you can find a schematic and see it. Good guns!

    Anybody know where to buy 30 Rem cartridges? I do not plan to ever shoot this rifle but I would like to see the round.

    These guns eject almost straight up, hence the offset scope. There were several style buttstocks for this gun, yours appears to be original. If the grip cap has a Remington logo, it is surely original. The bolt release is a small lever on the left side down low. Push it down to release the bolt. Pulling the bolt back to release it will only work if the magazine is loaded. ALL Remington model 8's and most 81's had fixed magazines. A few 81's of the "Special Police" model had a detachable 15 shot magazine, were made by Remington and sold only to Police Departments. They are VERY rare. A few Model 8's and 81's were modified by gunsmiths to take a special detachable magazine but they are rare.

    The grip cap is oval, with "Remington" curved along both sides of the oval. One screw in the center. 2 clusters of what look like oak leaves on top and bottom of screw. Outline oval ridge inside the exterior oval edge. Will try to post a photo soon.... (Why would someone special order a grip cap on an otherwise "plain-Jane" rifle, with no checkering or engraving? Any thoughts?)

    Sorry, I read your post wrong. You just want to close the bolt? Just depress the button by the trigger guard and it should slam shut. Hope that you don't have the bolt-head problems that I had. BYW, better get after that rifle with some oil and 0000 steel wool.
