Stevens/Savage 16 gauge serial # history
I have a 16 gauge double barrel shotgun.Serial # T58430.It say's Springfield Arms Company,Chicopee Falls,Mass,U.S.A. on the side of the receiver.On the bottom of the receiver it has the letter I in a small circle.On the inside of the receiver it has a lower case b stamped on it.The barrels are 27 1/2" long and say 16 gauge on them,with no other writing.Other barrels that I have seen say "proof tested" or "steel forged",this one dose not.There is no model # (311,315 etc.).From what I have found,the gun was made in 1957.It was passed down to me from my grandfather who bought in new,making the manufacture date seem to new to be correct.He passed away in the early 60's.I'm not to sure,any help would be great.

When Savage used the Trade Name of Springfield Arms on their firearms it was on the basic utility/economy models of their standard guns. This usually entailed changes in the finish or type of the wood, and steel parts so the shotgun or rifle could be sold at a lower price point by a mass merchandiser. I remember before the Gun Control Act of 1968 it was common in certain areas of the country for all the little hardware and dime stores to be selling shotguns and .22 rifles. Springfield Arms Co. marked guns were the type they normally carried. They weren't high dollar guns back 50/60 years ago, and they still aren't. 0 -

You might try the Savage customer service folks. There are also a number of on-line forums specifically for Savage firearms collectors, it's possible that one of them has could help you DOM wise?0
