    bperdue21,

    The 300 Win Mag was introduced in 1963. Up until that time 300 H&H was "THE" 300 mag. Some manufactures of guns & dies saw no need to specify which 300 mag when there was only one.

    That was the other reply I got, but the die just doesn't look like it is from the early 60s and I don't know why he would have had it. I can't really get a picture right now, but it had a silver coating that was flaking off of the die, if that could help someone age it. I was hoping it was going to be a 300 win mag die so that I could use it.

    bperdue21,

    Try this;

    Run a 300 Win Mag case into the die in question far enough to start forming the shoulder area. The 300 Win has a shoulder angle of 25 deg., the 300 H&H has a shoulder angle of 8 deg. 30 min.

    Be sure the case is well lubed before trying because if it is a H&H die, you will need the lube to keep it from sticking in the narrower tapered body.

    bperdue21,

    John (Pondoro) Taylor, in his book, African Rifles and Cartridges, spoke highest praises for the ".30 Magnum", the .300 H&H,...

    The 'silver coating' sounds like it was maybe made by Pacific or maybe even early Hornady.

    An easy way to assess the die is to cast it with Cerrosafe, then measure the casting and compare the dimensions to a cartridge chart. Be sure to remove any extraneous parts before casting. If you just can't bring yourself to spend a little bit of money on some Cerrosafe then one member has suggested that crumpled and compressed aluminum foil forced into the die will work to get you close for the dimensions.

    Without dimensions, we can't be absolutely certain what the cartridge might be.

    Best.

    Okay, I got to take a look at the dies again the other day. They are lyman dies. The sizing die is a .300 win mag. The seater die says 30 cal magnum. I am in good shape now.
