SHIPPING LONG GUN FROM CA TO OUTOFSTATE FFL

WHAT LAWS ARE THERE REGARDING SHIPPING MY LONG GUN I SOLD, TO A FFL DEALER NOT IN CA. I CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE AN FFL.I WILL BE SHIPPING UPS FROM CA TO ANOTHER STATE.?????????????

    you basically need 2 things
    1. a signed copy of the receiving FFL's license
    2. make sure the winner of your auction has checked to see that his FFL will accept the gun from a non-FFL---while it's legal for you to ship and sell it some FFL's have a personal rule about who they accept and don't accept firearms from.

    Also if it is a semi-auto rifle with a detachable magazine you might have to make sure it's legal in the state you are shipping to----but since you are already in a 10 round only state that shouldn't be a huge issue unless this is an older pre ban gun. Also do not go to a UPS store to ship it-they will not accept it. You have to go to a main hub--you can also ship legally long guns via the US Post Office.

    As a nonlicensee, you do not need a copy of the receiving dealer's FFL. It is enough for him to tell you his FFL number. In either case, you must verify his license & address by using FFL EZ-Check (on the ATF website).

    Neal is correct, a dealer is not required to provide an non licensee with a copy of his FFL and only needs to offer proof that he holds a valid license for the purposes of the transfer. The FFL number and the use of the online ATF check is the usual method. Be 100% sure that the dealer will accept a firearm shipped by you (a non licensee) before you ship because once the gun gets there you are in for serious hassles if he announces that he won't accept it.

    The EZ Check would work too-I would just make sure to print the page and take it with you to whatever post office or ups hub you are going to. When I lived in CA I had nothing but problems from Postal employees who didn't know their Domestic Mail Manual and would make me open the box to verify the weapon was unloaded(which they can do) and that I had the signed copy. Here in WA it is much easier-basically tell them an unloaded firearm is inside and where it's going, pay the money and out the door--have only had 1 USPS office here give me problems and I no longer use that office.
