AR15: Flat top/optic issue
Does anyone know of a company who sells some kind of rail or riser that would allow an EOTech or red dot style sight to sit on a flat top upper AR reciever so that the optic sight picture will clear a standard fixed front sight post? What I am looking for is an unobstructed optic view not obscured by the view of the top of the front sight post.

Those type of sights are meant to co-witness with the standard sights. Most people that dont want an obstructed view go with fold up sights.
The problem with what you want to do is that it put the sight so high above the gun you run into problems like getting a cheek weld. Also as the sight gets higher it will change how the bullet drops vs your sight.0 -
Such a mount would be so high as to be unuseable. The only way to mount an optic w/o getting a blur from the front sight tower is to use a rail gas block. 0 -

If you go Eotech, it should have the mount built in.0 -
I dont see a problem with an EOTech They line up quite nicely without a riser...
However if you wish to add a magnifier behind it without issues with the rear iron sight, you will need a low profile folding iron sight such as the ARMS 40L or Midwest SPLP..
Also I'd recommend one of the compact Eotech models like the 511 or XPS-1 if you plan to use a magnifier...
With an Aimpoint ML2 or 3, a cantilever mount that cowitnesses in the lower half or third of the field of view would be best IMHO... good mounts usually cost over a houndred bucks.. a cheap and easy way to deal with this is to get a half inch high, 4 slot riser and use the supplied extra low ring that comes with Aimpoints..
Put the riser far forward on the reciever, then piggy back a magnifier behind it, or whatever.. Again remember, a "low profile" folding rear sight is the best way to go because you may wana switch to a magnified optics without removing the rear sight or adding a riser...
being able to use ironsights through a red dot sight is a good thing... red dots are an aiming aid,they should not be used to the the exclusion of irons. Thats not to say red dots like the Aimpoint or EOtech arent precision optics, they are..
but Irons never need batteries, and they are water proof no matter what...0 -
A.R.M.S. rail #54 it will put your Eotech well above the iron sight and is a see thru design. How ever you may need a cheek rest or adjustable stock to get a proper cheek weld when using the Eotech. 0 -
OR,...swap out the front sight with a picatinny gas block and put a flip up front/rear sight on. Your EOTech will sit in front of the rear sight. If you need open sights the front/rear flip will provide that without any blocking of the EOTech. 0 -
Thanks for all of your replies. The reason I am looking for such a riser is that sights such as the EOTech are true holosights and don't need to be "co-witnessed" to the front sight post. Also, the AR I recently bought has a flat top reciever and a fixed post front, which makes the window of the EOTech seem "cluttered". I believe the A.R.M.S or a Warne RAMP type system will work out well....especially with the snap on M4 stock comb adjuster that I kept from the AR I sold. Either added rail I hope, will clear the front post with an EOTech. Thanks again for the replies....this forum is ALWAYS helpful! 0 -
yes it can be used with the window covered, or cracked.. but if a set of batteries fail, you dont have a sight... if it doesnt cowitness you dont have a sight, until the mount is removed or you replace the batteries.... If you have a 512/552 that means removing the sight..
I thought the same thing, that the FSB was too much of an obstruction through the EOtech, but I got used to it..0 -

Check out Brownells or Midway for "AR Riser" or under their optics section. Lots to choose from.0
