The Aimpoint is a big seller in the sand box. Brownell's has just about every type of scope & mount you can imagine.

My preference was an EOTech, but all the name brand ones work well.

It would help (a lot) if you would say what you want to do with the gun. Defense? Hunting? Target shooting at close distance? Competitive (long range) target shooting?

Yes, of course you can use a red-dot sight on an AR-15, and plenty of people love them.

Ditto for holographic scope (EOtech, etc).

I think its hard to argue with a fixed 4x sight for general use.

I don't know which red dot you have but the least red dot scope I would use is the Bushnell M&P 1x32. I'm currently using 4 of them. It has the t-dot reticle and has both the red and the green. The green is much more easy on the eyes in low light conditions. These you can pick up for any where between $90-$150. I just purchased a Burris 3x AR322 price $299 almost every where. Then comes the Aimpoint/Eotech's there good but your looking at $400 and up. Don't know how much you want to spend but these are the minimums I would use.
