The only marking that absolutely has to be on the Colt is the serial number. Note the serial numbers location in this photo. If your pistol doesn't have a serial number, there is something definitely wrong. 0 -

The picture you have is of a COLT vp proof mark. with that said it should have a serial number UNLESS this is a "LUNCH BOX " pistol during the early years of military contracts there were a number of pistols that escaped from the plant without serials or marks of any Kind. However there were many pistols that were taken from the military and then were Cleaned of all marks that could identify them as U.S Governmental property . If you can prove by the markings on the slide and frame that this colt was made pre 1934 Then it does not HAVE to have a serial . However if the pistol ever had a serial number and this serial number was ground off then it is not legal to own unless you get BATFE to assign a serial number for the frame and you have this serial number put on the frame. I have a lunch box gun with no serial but I can prove it never had a number and I have a letter from BATFE stating it is legal to own. 0 -

The serial number has been removed. Very neatly, maybe even with a milling machine, you can see the ledge formed by the cut at the pencil point.
The gun is now illegal. "Contraband" in BATF-speak.
Note that it is marked "Government Model" above where the serial number used to be, not "United States Property" as for a military weapon. This is a commercial model, so the usual alibi of Grandpa removing the serial number to keep his pilfered service pistol from being traced does not apply.

My suggestion is to remove slide Barrel and all small parts from the frame. put these parts up for sale and throw the frame in the trash . Or remove all parts give to a friend to keep and then take the frame only to the nearest BATFE office and see if they will assign you a serial number . They may do this because you can tell the serial number was removed years ago[:)] or they may take the frame from you[:(] They will not charge you with a crime because you brought the item to them . If they take the frame then sell all the parts here and post the item number of the parts when you do I would like the parts . 0 -
Now hold on, first off the stamp marks look good & the gun has been wire brushed all about the gun & this area looks unreasonably clean. 2nd it hasn't been milled off by a machine based on the total of the frame. 3rd I can't believe a person would suggest to tamper with evidence of a "possible" crime, mind you speech is not totally free of responsibility and to suggest or possibly coerce someone may get a person in some serious trouble. I really hope a US Marshall didn't already hear about this. So again, where did you get this gun? Did you find it? Was it given to you? Did you purchase it from someone & if so did you get a receipt? This gun doesn't appear good. 0 -
I believe because there are pics of this non-serial# gun it may be a little of a problem for you. Keep in mind there are usually bad intentions associated as to why a gun has no serial # when others within that year of manufacture of that particular model had them. Also keep in mind that it seems it can't be proven if the number was in fact removed at any point in time or when. If this is in fact a gun to which the # was removed it seems to provide probable cause to reasonably assume it may have been used for illegal purposes & your local law enforcement agencies do need to inspect the wear signatures on all the parts and at least fire a test shot to retain the bullet impressions of the bore and shell case marks associated with this gun as a complete unit so to research the data bases of current crimes and cold case files to find if a possible match that is if it does have a match. It would be greatly unwise not to contact an attorney or an law enforcement agency, as it would likewise be just to turn in a frame without the gun vitals that may or could have been used to murder someone just to get a new # to start fresh. Realistically you've got a problem. I hope you have a clean background. Get a attorney, get with law enforcement so if it's a crime gun that some victim's family could get justice served and a criminal gets due process of law. "DO NOT" sell or get rid of the vital parts. Now that there's public knowledge of the gun & what it looks like you must do the right thing. 0 -
Tear it down for parts, chop saw the frame and toss it away, there is nothing much else to do. The serial number has been removed, no need to speculate as to way because it really makes no difference. In the real world retaining the pistol for your own use probably won't have any serious repercussions. Selling it or moving it out of state are both serious felonies and people are prosecuted for both. I am going to delete all but your first your photo for your own security. 0
