I-J Long Barrel Revolver

Hi All !!!

Nice to find another site that enjoys the Iver Johnson brand of firearms.. I have collected them for a long time and up until now have not had any luck in finding anyone with the history knowledge such as you guy's..

I have six revolvers in .22 to .38 calibers and am now finding out that the American Revolver Co. (that was an acquisition or originated) has many parts that will interchange with the I-J frame.. I have also found you can adapt a .38 Barrel & Cylinder to a late model frame .32 and it will lock-up and "clock" just fine..

I will post a pic of my favorite ("7" inch barrel) .38 which I load with four grains of smokeless and a round ball for ton's of fun in the backyard..

"Question": Are the longer barrel model's rare and is there a best guess on value that I can apply ???

    from where did you measure the barrel on this revolver. the longest length the catalogs offered was 6 inches. if it truly has a seven inch barrel it would be a very special order model.

    if this revolver was mine i would stop firing it with smokeless powder it is a second model designed black powder only. every time you pull the trigger on a smokeless load you stretch the frame a little more and one day it will not time any more.

    as far as interchanging the 32 S&W long with the 38 i would say only if it is a third model. this is the only model that was offered in 6 shot 32 S&W Long and 5 shot 38 S&W.

    the longer barrels do not show up as often on the used gun market so in that respect they are rarer but i don;t really think they would add much more than 10% to the value. the newest edition of the blue book (30th) is updated with new values in the iver johnson section i would suggest this is where you look for values.

    if you are not aware of it already i would suggest you get a copy of the newest edition of the iver johnson book available from gunshow books. you might also be interested in visting my web site listed below.

    Thanks for your informative reply.. I want to apologize for my late response as I have been on a mission of mercy to my Son's home up in northern Ohio (no electric and 36 inch's of snow).. I live in Canton, OH where we only have six inch's so far.

    After reading your reply I see I can no longer rely on my memory, so here goes..

    Yes, the .38 in the picture does have a six-inch barrel! I will take your advice and put it out to pasture.. At first my assumption was that if it was chambered for the .38 S&W then it must be a smokeless round and I had no problem (short term) firing a box or two thru it.

    The other mistake in my post was that I referred to the "other" matching brand as being the "American Revolver Co." when in fact it is the "U.S. Revolver Co " mine with a five-inch barrel..

    I will also take your advice and purchase the reference books you have recommended..
