Winchester Model 1894 value
I'd like some help getting a value for an old 1894. It is an octagon barrel, full length magazine chambered for 38-55 win. it has a cresent metal buttplate with no checkering on the stock or forearm. the serial number is 75574. the rifling in the barrel doesnt look too bad, not like new though. but.. it is 111 years old. there are no cracks in the wood stock and the finish seems good. any help would be appreciated, thanks a lot.

I have an Winchester 1894 (ser. # 114xxx) and would like to find out its value. It has a crescent butt, fancy checkered grip, lyman rear and front sights, takedown, full magazine, double set triggers, engraved on both sides, .30 caliber, 24" barrel. I was told it was sent back to the factory for all the extras.
Thanks, Raymond0 -
Hello Raymond,
There are no Model 1894s in the 114,000 serial range that were factory engraved.
If you want an opinion concerning the value and authenticity of your 1901 vintage Model 1894, you will need to provide the complete serial number, and post a series of clear & close-up pictures of it.0 -
Thank you for the quick reply. I had a typo on the serial number (118416). I was told that it was an 1894 made in 1898. I'm new to this and I will try to get some photos posted. I understand how stories can be enhanced over the years.

Hello Raymond,
Good news... serial number 118416 was one of the few authentic factory engraved Model 1894 rifles! This is one case where posting the proper (and complete) serial number paid great dividends[^].
In order to properly evaluate your Model 1894, I will need to see as many pictures of it as possible. Suffice it to say, you potentially have a very valuable Winchester.0 -
Post'em please.....I want to see this one. 0 -
Here are a couple of pictures. I can take some more pictures if these go through.

OK, your old Model 1894 has what is referred to as "F-pattern" carved stocks, and what I believe was referred to as $6.00 engraving. The Engraver was most likely John Ulrich. The finish on the receiver is "gold-wash", that has seen a fair amount of wear. It has a Swiss butt plate, and what appears to be 2X walnut.
Because of the sheer rarity of a factory engraved Model 1894 (just 355 out of the first 353,999 made), I estimate that the minimum value of your gun to be in the $12K - 14K range. If the graded condition had been higher, it would easily have been $18K - $20K. Now, with all of that said, there is no real way to put an accurate price tag on an really rare Winchester, and your gun is in that category. It could easily sell for considerably more than what I quoted if it were sold in a large (well advertised) auction. One never really knows what one of the true "deep-pocket" collectors is willing to pay for a rare Winchester. This much can be said for sure... you have an extemely desirable Winchester that is worthy of any collection[^].0 -
That is onebeautiful piece of american artwork! You have a treasure in the gun world.

Your gun was definitely engraved by one of the Ulrichs. I suspect the wood was done by one of them too. The engraving pattern is a classic No. 9 pattern from the Highly Finished Arms catalog. The carving is an F pattern, from same catalog. The condition of the plating may not be great. It usually isn't on these older guns but the condition of the engraving is excellent. It is nice to see a REAL factory engraved Winchester once in a while. 0
