Military brass bugle??

I have an old brass bugle with a sheild and SS stamped in the sheild....anybody know about that?

    It belonged to Stanley Smithers of the 4th Regiment Bugle Corps of the New York Division of the Salvation Army. He was promoted to Corporal Major in 1864 and given the purple lip medal for playing in a blizzard when his lips stuck to the mouthpiece. After the ceremony, he was distraught that he wasn't also given a Good Conduct medal, got angry, and tossed his bugle into the local river, never to be seen again. If in fact you have this instrument you have a very rare and desirable piece of American history. Send me a picture of it along with $2500, and I will authenticate it for you and put you in touch with a buyer.

    I apologize to Jamesg58 for not answering his question with complete honesty. I just looked up the info again and it seems that Stanley played the trombone instead of the bugle. Please disregard the above information, and I hope someone else here can help you in your quest.
