I have this old gun .Just wondering the age and value. The #is87xx and the gun is in great cond, The cal. is 40-63 ballard.

    Hello The Ballard is a very nice rifle and in good ORIGINAL condition worth quite a bit However most of theses have been modified and or reblued ETC this can cut the value by 50% or more. This is one of those cases that one picture is worth a thousands words 7 the ONLY way anyone can give a meaningful Value. Posting pictures is sort of tricky[:(]but if you look at the first few post they are named STICKY one tells you how to post pictures.

    Edit Great news if all original on your pictures don't try to get pictures of the whole gun but rather detail close up of sights both front and rear any writing on the barrel and receiver butt plate muzzle make the pictures our eyes from about 6-12 inches away.

    As far as I know this gun has never been touched, and is in orignal condition. I will try to get a picture up

    Marlin made about 40,000 Ballards from circa 1875-1890. In 1881 the company name was changed from J. M. Marlin to Marlin Firearms. So looking at your frame marking should give you an idea if it was made before or after 1881 (of course some overlap exists). My guess would be that yours will be marked J. M. Marlin. Also, when it was made does not always equal when it was retailed.

    Value depends greatly upon condition and originality, but since the No. 5 Pacific is one of the more desirable models for collectors even a beat up one will fetch $500-$1,000.
