Winchester Model 94 with a barrel issue
I have a Winchester Model 94 that seems to be developing cracks inside the barrel, just below where the front sight is mounted. The cracks haven't seemed to affected the accuracy (but then again, I'm not the most accurate shooter) however I'm not comvfortable firing the rifle with this issue. What might be causing this? Can the barrel be replaced economically (it's one of the "cheap" Model 94's - in good condition worth around $350 I think)? Or can the rifle be used safely in this condition?

Hi....Frequently, barrels show up in the GB parts auctions, both new and used. You may be able to find a reasonably priced one for your rifle, and have a smith replace it for you. I did this as a caliber change, also (44 mag to 44-40). BT 0 -

First, welcome to the GB forums!
I think the key words here are "seems to be" developing cracks.
Cracks will develop in any metal from vibration or flexing/bending repeatedly. Stress cracking normally would appear on the outside of a barrel first simply because any flexing will move/work the outer surface most.
4100 series steel is generally used in gun making. It is one of the many steel alloys that resist work-hardening best, thus is less apt to develop cracking than would tool steel.
First thing, DO NOT shoot the gun until it is given a thorough check by a competent 'Smith.
Things needed to accurately appraise the barrel's condition:
1) a thorough cleaning
2) a thorough check with a bore scope
3) either a dye penetrant or magna-flux dye check
4) re-examine with the bore scope
The dye check will tell if the barrel in fact has cracks or if you are seeing tooling marks that were not lapped out.
Bottom line, it is time for a trip to the gunsmith for a check up.
