    Depends on the use.

If you are looking for a accurate rifle any of the AR-10 style guns will be more accurate then the M1A.

If you are looking for a battle proven rifle the M1A has it.

    I own 3 M1A's and plan on building a custom AR-10 in .243.

Ruger has a .308win back when called the XGI, not very many of those around, I didn't hear they were going to start making it again. Wouldn't surprise me if they came out with an AR-10 variant of their own, since they came out with an AR-15 type recently.

Fulton Armory makes a very good M1A. I own a Springfield, no complaints here.

Peronsally I'm a bigger fan of the HK 91 delayed roller system. I wouldn't settle for anything other than HK like some Century Arms discombobulation, but I do think its the best. I have one of those Century Arms jobs and a CETME, and gotta say I've been really impressed, I'd really like to get hold of a real HK. There's no gas systems, no pistons, nothing to worry about breaking. Its the simplest design, which makes it the most reliable.

And don't forget about the FAL designs. DSA makes a heck of a rifle, and the adjustable gas system gives it the ability to shoot heavier or lighter loads and get a little more gas when its dirty.

I had a DPMS LR-308, and like a fool got rid of it, in the height of the Obama frenzie, when I was offered about twice what I had into it. Mine was the heavy Stainless fluted bull barrel model. I had a NightForce NXS 5.5-22x56 scope on it, in a LaRue Tactical 104 mount, A Magpul fully adjustable stock, and a Bushmaster 2 stage match trigger. It was utterly reliable, and even a beginner could make long distance hits with it(6" popper targets from 300-500 yards) with some coaching.

The M!A is the standard of which all others are judged, and that is for a reason. The Military version(M14) has been brung back to life in the sandbox too.

The FAL is a great prooven design also.

My money would go back into the DPMS. Just make sure you get the bells and whistle one, if you do. That is the one with the dust cover over the ejection port, and the forward assist. they have a cheapened version without those on it, out now.

Of the AR-10 types I'd go for the Rock River - it takes cheap and plentiful FAL mags.

I think there is a group fixing to bring out an AR-10 type that will take G3 mags, even cheaper and just as plentiful. Currently vaporware though.

Personally, I'd not go for an AR-10 but rather a FAL - DSA makes a great one (FN reps on a FN forum recommend it as the best new FAL you can buy in the US) for a very resonable price. And they are US made (with some surplus parts).

Absolutely the M1A. Accurate, reliable and lots of magazines and parts easily available.
The H&K is reliable but it 'feels' heavy and seems to kick harder than an M1A.

+1 ... esp if you get the varminter/bull barrel models. Good luck!

For me it wouldn't be any decision. M1A fitted with a wood stock.[^]

I rate them the following for accuracy:
    1. AR10
    2. M1A
    3. FAL

My next 308 semi auto will be the M1A. I've owned a FAL and Cetme. Neither were as accurate as the M1A.

and genrally they wont be drobs, they where designed as infantry rifles with 4-5moa accuracy standards.

then as parts kits where rebuilt in this country, I doubt if any stanard besides fireing a few terst shots mattered to manufacturers like CAI....

there are highquality exceptions, but the exceptions are built to be exceptional..

but to answer your question GF,

Depends on what you want, if you want a handy social rifle, the DSA FAL carbine, Ar-10 carbinefrom DPMS, RRA or armalite(my personal favorite is DPMS), M1A socom or scout, ect would be a good choice.. I like FAL and the DPMS LR30 "m4" configured carbines..

If you want accuracy at 1100 yards an AR-10 like the ones made by fulton armory or PRI or a custom builder would be the best choice in myopinion.. a 18" stiff barrel might get you to 1100 yards. I prefer something in the 21" or 22" length range and contoured heavy. 1-10twist rate.
