Replace Slide on Gov't M1911A1 (circa 1945)
I own a government model M1911A1 (Remington Rand - according to its serial number manufactured in 1945). I've been using at as an occasional shooter but I'd like adjustable sights. What are the ramifications associated with replacing the slide with one that has adjustable sights? Should the barrel and bushing also be replaced?

Choice is Yours: But if You wish to shoot the Weapon it would be simple enough to convert from one to the other..I have a .45 that I have built to be convertable...Barrel, Slide, Bushing...Keep in mind that it would behoove you to Fit the Slide to the Frame..Don't File or Grind on the Frame..If you grind on the Frame the original Slide won't Fit correctly..Have a Happy New Year......Best.... 0 -

My suggestion is to purchase another slide and install a Bomar rib this will give you first rate front and rear sights and later if you want you can mount a RED DOT sight when your eyes start have trouble with IRON sights If you want double click on my name and this will let you email me and I can send some pictures . If you have a Military 1911A1 that is original don't do anything to original parts that cant be put back as it came originally.
EDIT NMEYERS does have a point if you want a match grade pistol. However if you want a pistol, with adjustable sights I would still stand by my first post. IF you try to remove the sights on the G.I. slide than they will never look correct when you try to put original ones back on. By changing slides either with a new or cosmetically damaged older one and a new barrel and bushing From Brownells "all types and prices " plus bomar rib you can have a pistol that will be easier to shoot and the groups will be better because of the better sights. and if you do not modify your frame I dont think anyone at a later date will be able to tell you had two slides for the pistol and now have the original back on the pistol. again double click my name and I can send pictures of what you need and maybe even where you can purchase them for not big bucks.0 -
First use a micrometer & get your specs. 2nd compare quality slides with those exact specs. When you change a part with a different part it's going to leave it's own "signature" (if you will) on the original from the tooling/machining marks and could cause a serious collector to question if it was completely original to begin with based on the part impressions & wear. I think you would be wasting your money.
Captkirk & Perry Shooter know how to do the other 40-50 accuracy upgrades to their guns, you don't. Precision adjustable sights will just frustrate you; your groups will be the same size. To make a service gun shoot well, you need to do the full package.
I'd just go out & buy a new "target grade" gun.

neil makes a good point, but if you want adjustable sights, then go for it! Brownells offers alot of slide/sight choices, but be ready to spend $200+ for one. Another option is Fusion. He/they sell 1911 components online and on he auction side here. give him a call and tell him what you want. He'll even fit he slide for you if you want.
Is your gun all original? you may not want to mess with it if it is, will ruin the value.

If your Remington Rand is a shooter and not collectable to you, I would suggest that you contact Cylinder and Slide and ask the cost of installing bomars on your slide. Should be a fairly quick turn around in the shop. I would also mention you might want to have a dovetailed front sight installed at the same time. This would be much less expensive than buying another top end for the pistol. 0 -
You can never have enough 1911's. Leave that one as is and buy a target 1911. 0
