A blog elsewhere describes the difference between models 642, 442, and 042.
I had never before heard about this oddball. It was a supposedly defective batch of 642 frames (something having to do with the finish) that rather than scrapped, where stamped and marketed as Model 042.
Do anyone of you fellers at GB own one of these? How rare or collectible are they? Would you please share pictures or links with more information?

Don't own one, never actually seen one in person.
But if this is anything close to what you say it is (ie a 642/442 with bad finish), and cheap ($350 or less), I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
Wouldn't bank much on collectibility. . .but as a pocket CCW gun these are probably still the standard against which all others are judged.
I don't much care about the finish here as I figure its going to get a bit worn from pocket carry.0 -
The Mod 042 does not have the grip safety of the Mod 40/42. Never cataloged. Made 1997 only. 0 -
The 042,s have what looks like a two-tone finish. Smith had a hard time matching the anodizing too the stainless finish. The only thing wrong was the look of them. 0
