An AR pistol can have any length barrel, but must start off as a receiver that never once in it's life had a butt stock attache to it. A short barreled rifle is an AR that either has, or once had, a butt stock attached to it and now has a barrel under 16" or an over all length below 26". An Any Other Weapon AR-type would be an AR pistol that has a vertical front grip attached to it. You can use the vertical forearms on rifles with no issues, but not on pistols. If you add a butt stock to a pistol with a barrel below 16" then you created a short barreled rifle.

An AOW doesnt have a stock, it would basically be a "pistol" with a vertical foregrip or some other gripping aid, like a strap or what have you..

A carbine with a 10" barrel is an SBR, (short barreled rifle) not an AOW.

Does adding a strap to a pistol make it a AOW... or does the ATF use to same classification for a rifle's pistol grip and forward grip on a pistol?

as far as I know adding a forward vertical grip or strap of any kind to a pistol makes it an AOW..

If you put a shoulder stock on a pistol it becomes an SBR.

I understand but a strap isn't a grip. and I know that you can mount a sling on to ak and ar type pistol. just food for thought?

Depends on who you ask. Most say that a strap is not considered a VFG so it would not make a pistol and AOW.

The reason that people (the ATF) say a pistol with a VFG is an AOW has to do with the definition of a pistol. "Pistol" means any firearm with a barrel less than sixteen inches in length, or is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.

So with that definition of pistol any of the modern handguns with textured trigger guards are AOW's since that area is designed to be gripped by a second hand..............

    No straps.

A million years ago (well, not actually that long ago) an ATF ruling came down about straps attached to the front certain MAC and Mac-type (Cobray and others) semi automatic pistols. The ruling was that the strap made the pistol and AOW and from that point on there was no longer any means of attaching the strap on the pistols.

so if i took my XDM with that little piece of rail under the barrel and put a virtical grip on it it would now be an AOW?
