Remington 760 280cal.
Question for the experts, I recently bought a remington 760 in a 280cal. When I inquired about it with a local gun dealer, I was told this caliber was not made in the 760 series and had to have been rebarrelled. The barrell is a remington barrell with the 280 stamp and sights are on it.
Was the 280 made in this series or was this gun dealer unaware of what he was talking about?

The blue book says marked 7mm Express in 79-80 for the gamemaster. The carbine was .280. I vote for unaware. 0 -

The 760 was chambered in 280 Rem. In both rifle and carbine.
Over the years I have owned several of them.0 -
Remington did make the 760 in the 280 Remington. I too vote for dealer not be informed. 0 -
What is the difference between rifle and carbine and how do you tell which one I would have?
And one said they were made 60-63 & another said 79-80. Was it both and how can you figure out the date of mfg of the gun?0 -
It was both. Easy to tell by bbl length carb 18.5". They have a date code on the bbl, see the sticky above sub thread rem. 0 -
bbl length is 21 1/2"
9EN 33 is stamped on the bbl
So I am guess that I read it right and it was made Oct 1966?0 -
I have both the rifle and carbine really not that rare. The rare one is the .222 and .223 0 -

I once found a web site that gave the calibers that were offered in the 760 and also gave the (percentage made) for each caliber. I cannot remember where it is...but one does exist. I have 760's in 35 Rem and 300 Sav. I believe they mentioned the 300 Sav Represented 4% of production....and the 35 Rem was 3%. I believe the "real rare" ones were the 222,223 and 257 Roberts. 0
