Removing stickers from a Win '94 stock

Well, I have a Win 94 and some idiot had stuck 2 3" smiley faces on the butt stock many years ago.

Since it's a 1953 model, I want to keep the original finish, but can't seem to find the best method.

I have tried spraying WD-40 and Rusty Duck Gun Lubricant and letting it soak.

The outer plastic part of the stickers peeled, leaving the bright yellow adhesive on. It's a hard sticker and I don't want to mar the finish.

Any ideas?

    Try hot water and some dish soap. I had a wooden stock that had packaging tape on it, the hot water and soap took it off pretty easily. Might have to repeat a couple of times to get it all of.

    Naphtha will remove it easily. Coleman lantern fuel and lighter fluid are 2 common sources of naphtha.

    +1 I used it on my Win 94 after someone wraped the stock in camo tape

    Stay AWAY from ANY chemical, if you want to retain the finish. Including WD-40!

    Go with HOT water, and dish soap, applied with a sponge. You might have to leave it soak on for a bit to soften up the paper and adheasive. I know acetone/fingernail polish remover, will remove the adheasive well, but it will also dissolve the finish.

    Try a hair dryer. Heat the sticker and peel gently.

    I got it done!

    I heated with a hair dryer and used the Birchwood Casey product with a little elbow grease.
    It too over 2 hours but the finish is fine!

    Those stickers have been on for over 40 years according to the previous owner!

    This old rifle looks 100% better.

    I see the problem has been solved, but for future reference...

    Goo Gone is mostly naptha. That's Zippo lighter fluid, which can be picked up cheaper.

    A primary ingredient of Pro Strength Goof Off is acetone. Your wife possibly has a bottle of this stuff sitting around, only it's labeled as nail polish remover.
