Marlin 336__Lever held open

A friend of mine was asking me what may cause the lever to be held open in his Marlin. He is in another state and I thought I would post a topic to see if this is a common problem.

I have had a 336 for over twenty years and have never had a problem with mine. If anyone knows of a problem common to this model, please reply.

    It's a common problem with Marlins when they get worn. The factory refers to it as "letting in two". What happens is that an extra shell(two instead of one) is released from the magazine when you work the lever and the lever jams open and won't move. I have cleared the jam by pushing the extra shell back where it belongs by using a flexible twig and inserting it through the loading gate. There are directions on the internet somewhere telling how to repair the problem yourself using new parts and grinding some of the old ones, but I would suggest sending it back to Marlin. I have yet to fix my 1895 in 45-70 made in 1972. Till then, I load one in the chamber and then one in the magazine. With only one in the magazine it can't let in two and won't jam. Of course it's now only a 2 shooter but that has always been enough for me.

    The second post sounds like a cartridge stop that is worn. If you can clear the rifle jammed listed in the first post it is fairly simple to play with the stop and see that it is not holding the rounds in the magazine until the lever clears the other round into the chamber.

    The problem of "letting in two" is pretty much confined to the newer Marlin 1894 which was designed for pistol length cartidges from 218 Bee to 44Mag. The problem is a knife sharp edge on the lever cam which digs a groove across the lifter. Even a very shallow groove will upset the timing of the lifter, the end of which also serves as the shell stop, thus allowing the rim of the second cartridge to start into the lifter thereby jamming the lever in the open position. The 336 in rifle calibers is designed differently and does not have this problem.

    also note that the factory recommends replacing the follower when useing the new 'lever revolution' ammo in an older marlin (you get the same problem)

    the screw that attaches the loading gate could be loose and the lever is binding on the loading gate. seen it happen more than twice.

    +1 tighten all screws first, start with the simple go on from there if it doesn't work..
